Candidates die. It happens. They could die in between election day and assuming the new position. They could die after their celebration speech.

How would that impact whether they should have your vote?

It doesn't influence me. It would influence me in the primary, but states have laws and rules in place for what happens if a elected official dies between the election and assuming office - either the seat is filled by appointment or by special election (just depending on the state) or both (appointment until the special election). The death of my candidate in that window would not be sufficient cause for me to vote for the other parties candidate. During the primaries the health fitness of a candidate does have the potential to influence me.
