A warm fire snapped and crackled the wood in the fireplace in a corner. My enormous fluffy bed invited me to slide between the sheets and drift to sleep in its depths. I just pulled back the covers when my name being called dissolves the dream in front of me.
"VALCOR!" Geoff yells to me and I try to get back the scene that was just playing in my head.
"SHIT!" I resentfully open my eyes and see once again the tree lined clearing in front of me. It's getting dawn and I start to roll up the blankets that were last night's pillow and cover. I yawn away the sleepiness and look into the woods. I stopped where I was. I've seen things worse than the shadows surrounding me, so it's not them that have caught my attention. It's a low, slow moving lump in the brush that has made me prick up my ears. I grab my sword and get ready to call Geoff's name. He already had his sword drawn and is feet from the mass. It is the way of our race, the Ohm. Geoff is first in command and therefore first to fight. I am second and his wife known as an Ohm-na.
Our race has markings on our arms; the larger our Grandaal is, the higher our rank. Each Ohm is paired with an Ohm-na of the opposite gender.
It is believed that my race, started spontaneously at first to humans, is the reason that the Erck-sha appeared. But it is the other way around. The Gods saw that there were Erck-sha coming to life so they made the children grow to be Ohm so that the Erck-sha could be defeated. But humans grow slow and the Erck-sha grow and mature three-fold faster than the humans and Ohm.
We were bred so that we could not fall under the Erck-sha spell like so many humans do and we are made tougher, stronger and more agile than humans. We ourselves are sterile, but every time an Ohm and an Ohm-na mate there is one more of the Ohm kind born to a human. The Ieh-Ohm, our elder, stresses that we have to multiply our race by as many as we can so we can overcome the Erck-sha.
Geoff talks to the beast, if friend or foe neither of us knows yet but I keep my hand on my sword. Every fight an Ohm and Ohm-na fight is to keep one another alive. We are natural born fighters and if either of us dies, we have to return to Ohm-she-Kendraan to be a trainer of other Ohm, which is an embarrassment to the ones who lost their mates. The younger Ohm make fun of the older ones that didn’t fight hard enough that they saved their Ohm or Ohm-na. It is not approved of, but it isn’t stopped either. Each of us dread ending up as a sole Ohm. The beast disappears and Geoff walks to me.
"He said that we are getting close to Draco's Lair. It shouldn't be far now."
"You expect me to trust it?"
"I am in command and therefore YOU will listen to ME. The Ieh-Ohm said we must make more Ohm, we will before we fight Draco. If one of us dies, we need to have more to help our population." I grumble an acknowledgment and pick up my things and sling them over my shoulder.
"You are too independent for your own good Valcor. I don't know why Ieh-Ohm paired us." I had no clue either.
The opening to Draco’s lair was way too easy. The guards were asleep and we chopped their heads off with ease. We walked in and saw our first awake Erck-sha. They stood about the height of a child. They had the body of a human, but with scales that looked of glass and just as sharp. Each Erck-sha had a crest of protection by their hearts. Where we were taught the soft spot was and the only place that an Erck-sha could be killed.
I decided to test their mentality. They turned and growled at us and just as they did, I said, “You all don’t want to break your crests, do you? Shouldn’t you take them off so it’d be easier to fight and they won’t break?”
They were as dumb as I hoped. They removed their crests and stood in front of us once again. “This will be easy.” I said from the corner of my mouth to Geoff who nodded in agreement. The first two lunged at Geoff and the other two at me. A mess of blades and a gushing sound later, one of my Erck-sha fell to the floor dead. The other kept fighting and I took his sword from his hand with mine, then swiftly puncturing him in the heart. I pulled back and hit the neck of Geoff’s last Erck-sha. Sparks flew when my sword connected with its neck. It turned to face me and Geoff slid his sword deep into its chest. I was surprised at their idiotic behavior. I hoped the next ones were just as stupid.
There were three tunnels leading out of the room. We took the center one, and it led us back to the room we were in. I looked at Geoff then said, “Maybe we shouldn’t try to make any more of our kind; they would be too stupid.” Surprisingly Geoff laughed at my comment and we tried the only path to remain, the left one. We came upon a set of stone steps, and we encountered our next enemy. But as it was a single one, and Geoff is the Ohm, I stood and distracted the stupid thing as Geoff impaled it. I scratched my head, “Is it me, or is this way too easy?”
“The Ieh-Ohm said they aren’t bright creatures.”
“Yeah, but how can any creature that’s supposed to take over the world be so stupid.”
“The demons must give the head Erck-Sha certain intelligence.”
“Must. Oh and I didn’t want to say anything because you’re the Ohm, but shouldn’t we have produced another child according to your rules?”
“We don’t have time for that.”
“Hey I was just trying to be a good Ohm-na and follow the orders that my Ohm made.”
“Since when have you cared about my orders?”
“Since you stopped acting like a pompous Ohm.” I said.
Every now and again the scene on the steps was re-played. I’d distract the idiot and Geoff would impale the creature. Then we came to Draco’s internal Lair. These Erck-Sha were actually smart! I was surprised. They didn’t put their crests down as I suggested. Which meant we had to hit them either harder, or more times. These Erck-Sha were tough. I had problems with fighting the one that started fighting me. I kept slamming my sword into it and more sparks flew. We were taught that their scales were like strong pieces of glass. If they were hit hard enough, they’d break and cut the stupid creature. I was trying hard to hit it in the same spot, but it kept moving, then I tripped on a stone and fell backwards. The Erck-Sha was over me now. I thought for sure Geoff would end up as one of the solemn Ohm, forever to have no one again for surely Geoff was too busy killing another Erck-Sha. But he must have finished sooner than I for his sword came from behind the Erck-Sha and hit the already bashed scale on the side of its neck. The scale shattered, but the Erck-Sha did not die. Geoff hadn’t hit it at the right angle. I thrust my sword up hard and I impaled the Erck-Sha. It’s ugly green body fell on top of me.
“Eww, I’m covered in goop.” I complained.
Geoff pulled the Erck-Sha off of me and helped me up. For the first time since he and I had been paired and made mates, I had a feeling of fondness for him that I never felt before. Then the Erck-Sha’s blood started drawing to the middle of the floor. Faster than either Geoff and I could realize. It was as if someone were sucking it all to the center of the whole building. What was going on neither of us knew. And then the blood started standing up. Taller, taller until before us was standing a figure of pure blood. It started speaking, blood dripping from the mouth area as scales started forming, “You have proven as worthy adversaries. By the looks on your faces you’ve never seen a Master Erck-Sha come to life before. I am made from each of my men. And you shall now know what it is like to die by my hand.” I whispered, “Oh Shit!” Under my breath, “Did you know about this?” I said turning to Geoff.
