Although Obama himself has said he does not wish DOMA to be continued.

Citing the Defense of Marriage Act, the Obama administration denied immigration benefits to a married gay couple from San Francisco and ordered the expulsion of a man who is the primary caregiver to his AIDS-afflicted spouse.

Bradford Wells, a U.S. citizen, and Anthony John Makk, a citizen of Australia, were married seven years ago in Massachusetts. They have lived together 19 years, mostly in an apartment in the Castro district. The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services denied Makk's application to be considered for permanent residency as a spouse of an American citizen, citing the 1996 law that denies all federal benefits to same-sex couples.

The decision was issued July 26. Immigration Equality, a gay-rights group that is working with the couple, received the notice Friday and made it public Monday. Makk was ordered to depart the United States by Aug. 25. Makk is the sole caregiver for Wells, who has severe health problems.

"I'm married just like any other married person in this country," Wells said. "At this point, the government can come in and take my husband and deport him. It's infuriating. It's upsetting. I have no power, no right to keep my husband in this country. I love this country, I live here, I pay taxes and I have no right to share my home with the person I married."...

The phone numbers for the White House comment lines are 202-456-1111 or 202-456-1414. Please, light up their switchboard. Tell Obama to reverse this -- tell him to do what is right, keeping this family together. He's already backed a bill to repeal DOMA. There's no good reason to kick the only caregiver of a spouse out of the country.

This is so terrible.

I work in Washington and we got in trouble talking about this because ultimately Obama is my boss.

He lost my vote come election.

Ooh, I didn't know you were local. What department do you work for though? In my lifetime of living in DC, with my friends and family working for the government, I've never heard of someone getting in trouble for constitutionally protected criticism of the current administration.

Student trainee within Transportation.

I also thought I had freedom of speech. But in my position I think it better not to make waves.

What? You gonna vote for Michelle Bachmann?

I'll be calling the White House tomorrow morning. Thanks for the heads up.

The use of This forum for political discussion ratherthan focusing on sexuality itself will drive me away. there are plenty of places for me to follow political issues. This is extraordinarily well covered in many places. Yur last two threads are purely political and I for one don't like it.

I came to the site for literary discussions of erotic matters, not politics. I get that elsewhere. It's a shame. I don't wsnt to be assaulted by politics every time I open this forum.

These are personal views sincerely expressed without rancor. I'm just disappointed and wish you would have stayed with relationships. Whether I vote for Obama or Romney or no one shouldn't be the business at hand. This place was a refuge from this stuff which assaults me the rest of the day. I'm not suggesting anyone bury their head in the sand. Don't literary people read other things too? thr uniquenessvof Lit is being diluted.

I'll survive without it but I didn't want to just stop tuning in without giving my reasons for removing this from my bookmarks as I have bern a steady contributor for the past year. it was fun while it lasted.

You didn't have to open the thread, you know.

I'll move this to News & Issues because it does belong there, but jesus christ calm down. Some of us like talking about politics. Some of us consider Lit our social community and we like to share things with the people we consider friends.

Why would you even post something like this? I don't come here for people whining about what Lit should or shouldn't be, maybe you should stop posting stuff like that.

I request that this thread be moved back into the main forum.

These things are part and parcel of GLBT life, in between the cock sucking, swinging, and panty wearing.

Respectfully, I'd prefer to keep it here. Some other areas of the forum, like BDSM and How-To, have an on-topic area (eg BDSM Talk) and an off-topic area (BDSM Cafe). Here, we have two topical forums. One is general (as 2wet4words noted, it's mostly sex) and one is News & Issues. By moving the thread, I wasn't implying that it's somehow not an important part of GLBT life - I was just putting it in the topically appropriate forum, much as I would do with personal ads or fetishists.

I hope you understand my reasoning and can accept my choice to move the thread somewhere topically appropriate. I realize it's preferable to get this in front of many eyeballs, but let's not forget why the News & Issues subforum was created: such threads were generally lost in the sex thread shuffle, and this forum was designed to keep them MORE prominent.

I still think 2wet4words is wrong to bitch about a thread nobody forced them to read, but it's true that it belongs in the topically appropriate place.

The main forum is a lot less busy since the straight cocksuckers threads all got moved. The dynamics are changing. More people are showing up that want to talk about being gay, what that means in more ways than sexually.

Up here, news issues simply get ignored.

Respectfully, I posted it down below because that's the GLBT forum and this is a typical part of GLBT life.

Fair enough. Maybe I'll look into closing the subforum, assuming threads can be moved back.

I agree with Stella_Omega.

Respectfully to the person not liking it just don't open the treads with titles you do not like.

Stella maybe you can add gratuitous GLBT pics to make some happy.
