One of the lady Litsters did a lil putdown of the ole Amicus recently, saying I didn't know anything about female orgasms or even female plumbing as it relates to sexual experiences.

Perhaps she is part of that 43% of women who seldom if ever experience and orgasm and was a little touchy about the subject.

This film was produced in 2006 and if mention has been made previously on the forum, I did not see it.

It is worth a look, for several reasons.

The O Tapes
Directed by: Chris Arnold
Category: Documentaries
Language: English
U.S., 2006 , 92 min.

"In startlingly frank on-camera interviews, more than 50 women, ranging in age from 18 to 85, share the pleasure of female sexual satisfaction – and the pain caused by orgasm’s absence.

According to a recent study in the American Journal of Medicine, “43 percent of American women are either non-orgasmic or will be non-orgasmic for a significant period in their lives.” “The O Tapes” tries to put its finger on the problem, so to speak, by offering a mix of historical perspectives, expert commentary, and intimate interviews.

“The O Tapes” takes viewers on a remarkable journey that’s by turns daring, amusing, and enlightening. The film’s sassy, confidential air will especially delight female viewers – though some of their male dates might find themselves squirming."

Ami, if you are referring to me and my correction of your assertion that the mouth of the cervix swoops down after coitus and slurps up semen?

I stand by my post. Find a textbook, and do some basic research about the process of fertilization.

(From the female standpoint, not the male.)

And I'm having difficulty with your belief that when a female presents factual information to you it means she is somehow non-orgasmic.

'Cause that certainly ain't the case, you old fool.

Yes, Sweets, t'was you indeed. You might revisit that thread, a few others have confirmed my assertions and the "O" Tapes added further confirmation that what I said was factual.

Happy for you, 'that is not the case', so to speak, and for over ten years, the theme song on my radio program was "Fool on the Hill" a Beatles song, but performed by Sergio Mendes and Brazil 66. So this 'old fool', is quite content with your name calling.

"Day after day, alone on a hill, the man with the foolish grin is staying perfectly stilll..."

there is science, and then there are anecdotes

First, let me apologize for not having viewed the film. The "O" tapes, which I presume, records the experience of 50 women. I will also presume, that they chose these particular recorded orgasms for their quality to sell a film and not their scientific value. And there are how many billion individual women on the planet presently? And how exactly did the producer of this film determine whether a particular woman was giving a believable, although not honest performance?

Science has not a clue about female orgasm, sure there are measurements of blood flow, and possible trials, as to what type of stimulation, whether it be erotic pictures, or actual manipulation, to determine, which is more effective. The subject is to deeply entangled in the working of the brain, believe me, the more research that is done, and the more the scientists realize how much they do not know.

It is such a personal and individual thing. I think it is beyond arrogant for anyone to present themselves as an expert on the subject.

Find a woman, fall in love, spend the rest of your life learning the many, many ways to make her come. Each one is different. What might work for you each and every day until you are 80, may become boring to us. Don't assume. Talk, ask, yearn to know, never give up.

ok, i will get off my soapbox now...and touchy does not begin to cover it, and i have orgasms, thank you....

Well, hello Lisa, and yes, you do seem a little touchy.

I might recommend you view the film before you discard the findings.

It wasn't a perfect presentation, but then, what is?

The program included History and Science and more than a bit of feminism and male bashing, some humor and some comments on 'raunchy' sex, that I found amusing.

My interest was that the program did confirm other sources concerning questions and suppositions including clitoral climaxes, Uterine or Vaginal orgasms, G spot stimulation and much, much more.

It also reinstated some opinions that a bare majority of women, in general, experience orgasms of any kind and that rather surprised me.

The women interviewed were a mixed bag, most lower class and less educated that I would have personally preferred and the medical, gynecologists and researchers and pundits, left a bit to be desired.

However, all in all, an educational experience, especially for those who don't ponder or research such things.

Unlikely to find it in this country. But I did hunt up a third party review

From Variety.com

The O Tapes
(Documentary)
By DENNIS HARVEYA RoseWorks and the O Tapes production. Produced by Chris Arnold, Jocelyn Scott. Executive producers, Paul Potter, Terry Davis. Directed by Chris Arnold.

With: Deborah Taj Anapole, Lonnie Barbach, Dixie Evans, Laura Berman, Jennifer Berman, Betty Dodson, Doe Gentry, Patti Groessl, Ruth McConnell, Lou Paget, Candida Royale, Beverly Whipple, Lara Vickman, Luke Weaver, Carissa Tadesco, Barbie Orr.

"The O Tapes," an occasionally glib, often amusing and lightly informative look at female sexual satisfaction (and the lack thereof), is a diverting docu. While it doesn't quite live up to its own Kinsey-esque billing, the pic's subject, televisual style and frank language make it a natural for premium cable slots.
Noting a recent study claiming that 43% of U.S. adult females are experiencing some form of sexual dysfunction, "The O Tapes" relies mostly on interviews to probe related issues in fast, often funny fashion -- from the question about orgasm to psychological hangups and the things most men don't, but should, do.

At first, the slick package seems a bit contrived, in part because most interviewees (excepting various academics and doctors) seem so unrepresentative of the general population. A large proportion are actresses, dancers, make-up artists, adult film talents and other showbiz types, suggesting helmer Chris Arnold and company didn't bother leaving Los Angeles County.

In thematic terms, however, the docu covers a lot of ground, however superficially. The speakers' range of experiences, insights and preferences run an impressive (as well as sometimes jaw-droppingly rude)gamut. Like "The Vagina Monologues" minus its grimmer stretches, "O Tapes" has a sassy, confidential, letting-hair-down air that will delight many viewers, though their male dates might squirm. A lesbian couple participates, but emphasis here is primarily heterosexual.

Breaking up the parade of talking heads is a mostly welcome combination of campy archival clips, brief comedy skits (the opening Adam and Eve one is a keeper), simple animations, and so forth. Editing is zippy; tech package polished.

Thanks, Staakers, a fair assessment, I think...

I wonder when people talk about a percentage of women, if they are speaking of all women alive today. I presume they would be.

Of course, there are many women alive today who were raised in the repressive eras before the 1960's/1970's. Those women - many of them at least - were taught that they were not supposed to enjoy sex.

Of the women born after 1965, and especially those born a generation later (i.e. 1985 or later), I would expect the orgasm percentages to be much higher. We (speaking as a woman born in 1975) had access to more and better information than our mothers and grandmothers did.

Of course, we also had access to loads of absolute crap but that's another matter.

Anyway, it was impossible for my mother to keep me from knowing about female orgasms - and God knows she tried awful hard (and when that didn't work, she used a hairbrush). There was just too much information available to me. On the other hand, I would not be surprised if she was unaware of such things herself before the late 1960's.

If one divides women along some kind of generational lines, I would bet that those of younger generations will have a much higher rate of orgasm ability, even if you somehow factor out the pre/post menopause issues.

Note: I chose 1965 based on a general intuition of when the sexual revolution would have had its effect. I could be way off base but certainly the tipping point happened some time before I was born.

A point well made Angelica, very well made and pertinent, I think.

Amicus, I absolutely believe that a marjority, or nearly so, of women never experience orgasm. I have spoken to many women (friends, mother, sisters, etc) in real life about sexuality and have had them laugh and get embarassed and clearly wonder what I could be talking about. I gave up and came here. Much nicer to find people on the same planet.

So what exactly was your point?

Lisa

OK, so here's a different perspective on the whole thing.

Take a look at this website. It's basically a whole bunch of 2-10 minute videos of the faces of people masturbating. There are a few men but the vast majority are women.

It's amazing the variety of intensity and "types" of orgasms that you see. I am surprised at that some women stop after a small "blip" without going over the top and getting the involuntary spasms that - to me - signify an actual orgasm.

Sure, a lot of them really get into it and come multiple times, but on the other end, a few of them don't even seem to be having orgasms. Maybe they can't or maybe they don't realize that there's more to be had.

Anyway, it's an interesting source of "research" into the matter.

And, oh by the way, there are some men on the site too. So, if you ladies want to grab some popcorn, we can all sit back and watch the guys make fools of themselves too. :p
