not a chance! I'm just bitter... At least that's what someone told me anyway. Truth is, I just never got into it. Must be a "chick thing".

Saw it...liked it...but couldn't help comparing Matthew Broderick to Robert Preston. I like Robert Preston better, because it seems Matthew Broderick is too damn young for the part, IMO.

He's got to be 40 if he's a day. Albeit, he retains his boyish Ferris Bueleresque looks and charm.

I guess that's what I meant - he *looks* too young. Robert Preston was sort of beat up and craggy-looking. Then again, I could just be saying that because I'm used to seeing Robert Preston in that role!

I haven't watched it yet (I taped it on the VCR)........but I have
a feeling that I will be doing a comparison thing too......I think
that Robert Preston originated the role on Broadway first before
the movie version way back..........

Excellent production. If I had to pick about it, and I will, I would say that they went too far out of their way to not "re-do" the movie, which, in effect, "re-did" the staging, tone, style and some of the casting of the original Broadway show. By throwing away great line readings by the great character actors of the film (Paul Ford, Hermione Gingold, Buddy Hacket) they underplayed wonderfully, but they also lost something, I think -- a sense of the River City universe created by Meredith Wilson. I didn't feel like Disney's River City existed, lived and breathed, -- Warner's did.

Broderick was fine. Different, but fine. Like one reviewer I read wrote, it's more of a re-imagining of the show, rather than a revival, which is always a welome thing.

I do think, though, it would have been a better film if Broderick and Victor Garber had switched roles.

I was also very much aware of how it was directed at a too brisk pace, aware as they were that the production would have to accomodate commercials which would add nearly 40 minutes to the show. By rushing through moments they lost a lot of moments.

Seriously. He barely got into town before he was talking about the Trouble...
