So after the discussion that popped up yesterday on the "What Are You Reading" thread regarding film adaptations of books, I got to thinking about some of the questions that were posed. Since at least a few people seemed interested in the topic, I figured it would be a fair idea to start a new thread on the subject.

So, to that end, I'll start with the question that was last posed on the other thread: Can you think of a film that was better than the book it was based on, and if so why?

Great idea for a thread!

I personally have to admit preferring the Lord of the Rings to the books. *waits for the onslaught*

Oh, that's nothing to worry about. I hated the books, and never even made it through the first movie. I mean, they were beautiful to watch, but for crying out loud they were so damned long and boring. If I wanted 4 hours of people walking, I'd just go jog a couple of miles and call it a day.

LMAOO well you do have a point there. Still, it did make me want to go see NZ even more.

Very true. I'd never really considered NZ before I saw the locations they used; now is very close to the top of my list of places to go before I die.

On an unrelated side note this marks my 69th posting on Lit. Insert adolescent chuckle and various Quagmire expressions.
This has been my little slice of juvenile humor for the day.

69.. ooohhhh LOL.. okay enough juvi humor.. You need to get to posting! LOL, everybody needs an avatar after all.

I've always found the book to be better than the movie. With the book, you can create your own images to the story, instead of having to follow what some director wants you to. It allows you to use your imagination more.

The movies handle the story structure in a vastly superior way. Tough Tolkien was a natural storyteller, he was not a natural novelist. The way the books are laid out can be down right frustrating.

I'd like to suggest Fight Club. I don't know that it's "better" than the book, but I think both the book and film are excellent and work just as well as separate entities.

I'd be tempted to say The Da Vinci Code, but that's only because I'd rather sit for two hours then read the insufferable and unoriginal dribble that spews out of the hack Dan Brown.

I agree with the Fight Club one. I LOVED LOVED LOVED the book & the movie, but yes they both had diffrences, the book isn't nessisarly diffrent but the dialog is interesting.

The Princess Bride...I tried to make my way through the book and it was total frustration

Oh!!!
I forgot... About a Boy and High Fidelity!!
Both the movies and books did not fail me :)

I can only think of The Virgin Suicides. I loved the film, but read the book afterwards and didn't think it was up to much. I'd give credit to a film director for seeing the movie potential in a novel without it having to be a classic or a bestseller first.
I actually prefered reading Lord Of The Rings to the movies though:eek:... and I prefered the old cartoon version to the blockbuster trilogy!:eek:

I loved the Hobbit cartoon, wasn't a huge fan of the LOTR cartoon, though it was pretty good thinking back on it.

LMAOO at "The hack Dan Brown" too true!

Gotta agree... I read the abridged version of the book (that missed out the 80-page ramble about trees... seriously) but then I suppose the author has been long dead, and writing styles back then were hugely different.
However, I'd much rather watch the movie every single time. :)
In fact, I'm gonna go watch it right now :D

I haven't seen About a Boy, or read High Fidelity, but I enjoyed the book and the movie respectively. He's a great writer! High Fidelity seemed like it was written for film. Which in retrospect you see periodically.

How often have you read a book and thought, wow that was too much like a movie?

Most of Michael Crichton's last few books. Loved the guy's earlier stuff, but began to write everything like it was a built in movie deal.
