The most confused and messed up lyrics...

Another one that's becoming more relevant every day, especially in states like California

"Jose can you see by the don's early light..."

instead of "Oh say can you see by the dawn's early light..."

I don't think I've ever seen head-scratching lyrics like those of "MacArthur Park." The popularity of that song over time completely escapes me.

I have trouble believing that people screw up Bon Jovi's "Livin' on a Prayer." Seriously...it's always sounded clear to me.

Another very commonly misunderstood lyric is from Toto's "Africa:" "There's nothing that a hundred men or more could ever do," is often sung as, "There's nothing that a hundred men on Mars could ever do." :D

You're kidding.

A classic was Cat Stevens "recreating" (playing on the playground) rather than "re-creating" (creating anew) on his famous recording of "Morning Has Broken."

Yeah, well as a collector of 50s/60s music I even have the American language translation of the Kingsmen's 'Louie, Louie.' You want incomprehensible, I got incomprehensible.

This is my favorite:

BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN: "Blinded by the Light"

What people sing: "Wrapped up like a douche, another loner in the night"
The actual lyric: "Cut loose like a deuce, another runner in the night"

Yeeeeuuuuup.

oh yes... that is a classic...

The FBI actually investigated the lyrics to "Louie, Louie", because J. Edgar Hoover thought it might be obscene. The slowed it down and had audio experts go over it and still couldn't decipher what the singer was saying.

a little off

Scar Tissue - Red Hot Chili Peppers

What people sing: "With the birds of shade it's a lonely view."
The actual lyric: "With the birds I'll share this lonely view."

Another tough one is Summer in the City by The Lovin' Spoonful.

The lyrics are not obscene.

The problem stems from the recording studio.

Nowadays, a recording studio has a microphone for each singer and one for each instrument. There are also 'tweeter' mics and 'woofer' mics to trap all of the frequencies. The results are then 'mixed' through expensive equipment to tweak out any weaknesses in the perfomance.

The Kingsmen recorded Louie, Louie in a studio with ONE mic. The results were recorded in a genuine El Cheapo tape recorder and later transferred to a master.

People can screw up anything.

A guy who used to work at the restaurant had two favorites:

Bon Jovi: "Shot in the head, and you're the same/ You give love the bad blame."

AC/DC: "Dirty deeds and the thunder chiefs . . ."

No matter how many times I tried to correct him, he always had his own lyrics. Ironically, if there was anyone who could actually get the lyrics of "Louie Louie" right, it would be him. ;)
