July, 1865, a small plantation near the San Jacinto River, Texas.
Major Arnold Random has just returned from the surrender of the last Confederate army to his old home, finding it in surprisingly good shape. How could that be? He freed his three slaves before he went off to the war. He knew that most of his old comrades-in-arms came home to ruined houses and farms. Was someone squatting on his farm?
And then he saw her.....Annie. His now twenty-year old former slave. What did she want, to keep his farm? Or was there something else? He remembered how she seemed rather infatuated with him back then, but he assumed that she would find a husband by now. Perhaps he was wrong.
"Annie, do you live here still? I set you free. You don't have to stay," he reminded her.
