I've often heard people discuss the symbolism of the man behind the curtain aka "the wizard of Oz", but I actually found the machine to be more interesting in its symbolism. It seemed to represent the lengths people will go to in the quest to avoid facing their fears and problems. A manufactured construction that is obviously ridiculous once it is revealed. Of course the machine reflects back on the person who built it, but in doing so it reveals more about that person than is readily apparent.

I think there's an analogy here somewhere, when you consider the manufactured constructions of society to avoid facing its fears and problems. The curtain is being slowly pulled back, revealing the ridiculous manufactured constructions of our institutions(or machines) and reflecting on those who built them. Scared old men trying to cling to power.

I guess if you make a system(or machine) complicated enough, those who understand the "levers" of power are made indispensable. The ultimate job security.

absolutely... religious hierarchy (and why latin was the hard fought-over language of the catholic mass), political, medicine and science over the years, hell--even down to magicians: I am convinced that clever illusionists got into places of extreme power (Merlin and Arthur as a literary analogy) through their ability to deceive the mind, and--as such--were able to have the ear of the kings/queens/emperors in a world lacking scientific knowledge. They possibly had more influence over national decisions affecting the world than any other advisor. Plus others needed to be enough in awe of them to be afraid to move against them, without being so afraid they'd do anything they could to see the 'sorcerer' dead.

as the saying goes *cue pink floyd music*: welcome to the machine

The practice of controlling people by conferring special knowledge or power upon oneself, or a group, through demonstrations of basic science, be it chemistry, biology, or astronomy has been going on for ages. Once the common people got wise to them, the power mongers had to create new unfathomable machineries to confound the public. Government and corporate bureaucracies, along with their arcane laws and codes, seems to be what they came up with.

As far as Pink Floyd songs go; "The Machine" is fitting, but I've found that Dark Side of the Moon pairs better with The Wizard of OZ ;-)

Shut up, Rory.

You're not clever enough to write something subtle.

The Dark Side Of The Rainbow.

Despite the members of Pink Floyd denying any connections between the album and the film, there are some who think the two go together like chocolate and peanut butter.

I watched it a few years ago and it is uncanny how some of the tempo of both music and film synchronize in places, and there are sections of the movie where song lyrics are befitting the actions on the screen.
You may be able to find it on the Tube of You.

It’s no Floyd Laser-Light Show (those with planetariums near will know about these) mind you, but that could also just be on account of the obligatory pre-show hotboxing that occurred.
