Ok with Valentines Day nearly upon us I was remembering the past V-days. I want to make it clear that I absolutely hate the commercialism and what not of the day but I also admit that I have gotten the wife an array of gifts and I'll never pass up an opportunity to tell and show her I love her.

Anyway I was just remembering the first year we lived on our own and we were poorish, struggling to make ends meet and so on. We lived in a one room flat where the kitchen wasn't all together separate from the bed room which also doubled as our living room

Valentines day came and neither one of us wanted to ignore it completely but we didn't have the money for lavish or even semi lavish things as we sort of needed to pay the rent on or by the 15 and we liked having luxuries like lights and heat and water.

Anyway we ended up lighting 99 cent candles and eating spaghettio’s and candy bars. We drank soda out of wine glasses that my parents inexplicably gave us as a house warming present and ate the food off of the mismatched plates we had at the time. Then we sat in front of the electric heater on or futon/couch and she sang to me.

I guess it’s funny that the little things are the one’s that touch you the most :)

That's beautiful, Des. I'd give anything for one Valentine's day like that.

:) That sounds like a beautiful Valentine's:heart: Day. Being together is the main thing; gifts are just fripperies. Nice, but not essential.:rose:

Lovely memory and thank you for sharing with us. It's not the diamonds or flowers, it's the caring that matters. We all need to remember that.
Oh, since we are on the subject of V day, could someone please tell me why we have Sweetest Day? Isn't that what Valentines Day is? Damn card companies!

Beautiful dosen't begin to describe it. Enchanting maybe. I lack words, but thank you for yours. They do bring out what the day is all about.

Happy V-day to you and the Mrs.

Reminds me of our first.

During a NorthEaster of all things on Cape Cod. (Where we lived up until three years ago.) Lost power, jurry rigged the oven so we had enough heat in the apartment so we didn't freeze. Had to move the HedgeHog into bed with us that night so it wouldn't freeze. Had three feet of snow when we got up the next morning. We sat around all evening between shoveling off the patio reading and talking by candle light. The only warm place was in bed. We still look back on that one with fondness.
