I just finished watching this movie, and........wow.

I'm surprised it didn't receive more critical acclaim or at least more press, than it did.

For those who haven't seen it, it's an incredibly beautiful movie. Johnny Depp is wonderful, as usual (he should have won an Oscar for his performance here), but the supporting cast were great, as well.

Anyone seen it?

Haven't seen it yet but his work in Sweeny Todd makes me have a man crush on him. Then again his work in Benny and Joon made me not hate him, and that was a huge accomplishment.

It got stupid distribution.
The producers had hoped to have it out for Christmas... ummm... 06? 05? and managed to get it into a couple of theatres for two weeks early December-- one in Beverly Hills, on in Manhattan, I think. Hardly anyone got to see it, as a result-- I remember that I was ill with the flu the whole time! Then it got pulled out, and didn't show up in the regular circuit until after the Oscars, and of course, it could not be nominated for the next years' Oscars because of that stupid two-week run the previous year.

It's a gorgeous film, in a filthy, muddy sort of way ;)

As beautiful as Johnny is in it, I am not real happy with his portrayal of Rochester. Johnny Depp, though it pains me deeply to say so, is a prude. And Rochester really, really loved sex. He was anything but a prude in any way. The film concentrates on his last years, as he was falling ill-- syphilis and, probably, a blocked urethra (which was common in those days), and most of us know nothing about the man at all. There could have been an excellent contrast between his extraordinarily happy life and his painful death. And it seems as if Johnny can't quite believe that Rochester was as happy as all that-- being a rake and libertine. In some interview, he said he felt a deep pain in Rochester's soul-- humph. You find what you look for, IMO.

I wanted to rent that movie this weekend, but I couldn't think of the name of it! thanks CLoudy:)

...but the scene where he's making love to Lizzie....*thud*

I also actually laughed out loud during his "play." :)

Get it, Carson. I'm still thinking about it, hours later.
