Marine Le Pen faces a shock defeat at the hands of the far-Left and Emmanuel Macron, exit polls predicted, after French voters turned out in force to keep her and the hard-Right from power.

In a disappointing result for the National Rally (RN) leader, the New Popular Front, an uneasy alliance of centre-Left, green and hard-Left parties, was predicted to win the snap parliamentary election with between 172 and 192 seats.

Mr Macron’s Ensemble (Together) alliance will win between 150 and 170 seats, confounding predictions of wipeout after he came third in the first round. RN will win between 132 and 152 seats and be third rather than the expected dominant force, according to the usually reliable exit polls.

the RN party has been stymied—for now
if the French people want to keep it at bay, their gov't will need to find a way to work together to move forward and keep RN in the rearview mirror.

The so-called “republican front” holding was key to the NFP’s victory. The front - a type of forced tactical voting, where some candidates withdraw to leave a single option for anti-far right voters - prevented scores of RN candidates winning.

East of Bordeaux, RN candidate Sandrine Chadourne expected to easily take the seat she was standing in. But in the end, she was narrowly beaten because of voters like winemaker Paul Carrille, who said he viewed voting against the far right as his democratic duty.

“Our institutions are strong. But it would still be very bad for the far right to win,” Mr Carrille told me outside the medieval town hall in Libourne.

The US system of government is very different from France’s or the UK. What happens in those countries will have little if any influence on what happens in the US.

Also, the left in the US has a much bigger problem that doesn’t terrify the GOP at all. If anything it’s the other way around. The Democrats are terrified of what they created and the mess they put themselves in.

On Sunday, Spanish prime minister Pedro Sanchez hailed France’s “rejection of the far right”. He welcomed the shock result alongside this week’s UK general election where the centre-left Labour party achieved a landslide, saying both countries “have said YES to progress and social progress and NO to going back on rights and freedoms.”

US Senator Bernie Sanders also congratulated the French left for “taking on right-wing extremism and winning”.

Brazil’s president, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, congratulated the NFP, tweeting that he was “very happy” with the “demonstration of greatness and maturity” that saw leftist and centrist political forces unite to prevent the election of the far right.
