The Last Taboo

I think that male homosexuality is still a taboo subject for an enormous number of straight men. It's not simply a matter of avoiding stories where the reader can't identify with a character. It's about the fear of being identified with that subject matter by others. English Lady mentioned "homophobia." Phobia. There may be women who are homophobic, but I don't know any.Whether or not we identify with lesbian characters in a story, if there is something else that draws us, we'll read the story. There are any number of stories at Lit where girl/girl sex is a component of the story, but the "sex object," if you will, is a male character who appeals to me. So I read the story. I'd be willing to bet that men are far less comfortable reading stories where male homosexuality is a component - even if at the end, you straight guys are invited to a potluck dinner with a tubful of naked virgins, if there are two other guys getting it on in the same story, you're going to avoid it. It's taboo.

A taboo is something forbidden -- it's entered the language from Freud, who wrote "Totem and Taboo".

A taboo is very far from looked down on: The opposite is closer: Rather, it's feared. Freud described how certain tribeseman considered having sex as taboo before they went hunting, becasue they believed that this would take away their power (I guess that depended on how good the sex was).

This is exactly the sense I meant when I said gay male sex is the last taboo for most men. For the majority of men (& not necessarily here on Lit, where we have a kind of skewed sample of the population at large), I think guy-on-guy sex is terribly troubling and threatening. It's something they don't even want to think about, something that makes them shudder. That to me is "taboo".

I'd say eating one's partner is kinda taboo, as that case in Germany demonstrated.

I do see dr m's point, though, there's a lot of (almost) murderous hostility around male/male stuff. It's the issue splitting churches, and-- judging by a Republican spokesman last night on CNN-- a chosen presidential election issue ('gay marriage').

It seem like one could judge by a) reactions of others, or
b) number of practicers. Gay stuff is pretty high in negative reactions of others. In terms of number of practicers, it's maybe 10-20% or higher depending on 'one time' encounters.

Parent child incest is far rarer, and by b) more taboo. Eating, even more.

Some straight men, maybe even the majority, might have antsy feelings about their own sexuality, but the entire society is militantly opposed to incest, especially when children are involved. There is a certain amount of gay bashing going on, especially by certain Neanderthal types, but known child molesters are at risk of lynching anywhere they go. I wouldn't say there are no taboo feelings about gay men but they pale compared to the anti-child abuse attitudes.

I'd say that the majority of men is of the opinion that "Gay sex is ok, but not where I have to see it." On the other hand, most don't want to witness ugly people getting it on either. Or scat sex, or sheep. It's the same thing, something that just plain visually or by association is a turn-off, that jinx the mood of the rest of the story/movie/live event/whatever.

Bondage gear is a major turn-off for me. A story can be really good, filled with just the right tension and eroticism. Then some bugger brings out the nipple clamps, and all that was good about the story goes down the drain. Is that my clampophobia? Or can it just be a matter of personal taste?

I wrote a story brimfilled with incest bro/sis sis/mom bro/mom and so on; there was a para about forced homosexual act (BJ).
I rec'd a letter saying the story was very hot, but the act had ruined it; and, iirc, the letter writer seemed to think he should have been warned; i.e., that I was violating a rule of common porn, no guy/guy stuff; and should let readers know.
