dr_mabeuse said:I love the negotiating that goes on in kissing, especially when you're kissing someone new. I like the way kisses communicate different things. The first kiss is always tentative. It's about finding out if it's okay to kiss. After that you start a dialogue, where you tell them how much you want them, and you show how far you're willing to go, what you're willing to give. It's always a terrific thrill when she responds, trying to top you, trying to outdo you in her boldness and lasciviousness.
Sex is an emotional acceleration, like riding a rocket, and the kiss is the take-off, where that sense of acceleration is most extreme. You can usually tell how good a story's sex scene is going to be by the kissing part, just like in real life. Most beginning writers seem to skip the whole erotic potential and nuance of the kiss and go right on to the screwing. Big, big mistake.
And don't forget bringing the fingers into play: peeling her lower lip down so you can kiss that tender inside. There's a lot more to kissing than just diving for the tonsils.

Some great words there, Dr. M. I completely agree; everything you said there is exactly what the kiss means to me, too, both for real and in fiction.
