The only mistake made here was trying the one juvenile as an adult. The sentence should have been lessened to one comparable for a juvenile. He was found guilty of aggravated battery, and likely so will the rest.

race enters the issue because of the discretion exercised by the prosecutors to charge them as adults and by the trial court's acquiescence in that decision. that made a HUGE difference in the potential sentence.

unfortunately, that nuance gets lost in the constant din of perpetual charges of racism.

The "Whites only tree" and the nooses thing was months prior to the assault. September 1st was the incident regarding the seating area, and the assault didn't take place until December. The two have little to do with one another other than to show that some of the students are racist fuckheads.
