From what I read earlier today the original charge against the "Jena 6" when booked was "Aggravated second degree battery" (which is acceptable and right), the D.A. upped that charge to "aggravated second degree attempted murder" and asked that all but the youngest be tried as adults. The charges were lowered again before the trial of Bell. The reasoning behind trying the "Jena 6" as adults seems to be to incur the harshest possible sentence even if the charges had to be lowered to Aggravated Battery at a later time. The prosecutor apparently wanted to make sure that they spent a very long time in jail. Why then were the charges against the 22 year old adult so tame in comparison for a very similar crime?

Keep telling yourself that the way this has been pursued wasn't about race, all signs point to a systemic problem, not only within the community, but within the justice system in the area as well.

They should have been charged with "aggravated 2nd degree battery" from the very beginning and tried as juveniles, "aggravated" only because the victim lost consciousness.

Anything more is and was just excessive.
