I do not enjoy birds at all, they mostly freak me out, but that’s a bucket lister for me. To see hummingbirds do their thing.

Ditto. Especially when they flutter towards me.

They are actually little feathered badasses. That being said, I only prefer them on the other side of a window, they used to come too close for my own comfort at my old house. It seems that I was not a threat sitting on the deck, reading books. I have never seen one fly upside down though I’d love to.

i love hummingbirds. today i spotted a moth that looked almost exactly like a bee. it wasn't until it slowed down on a flower that i could see the wings, and i realized it wasn't some crazy hybrid bee. i don't get hummingbirds, but then i also haven't put nectar out for them this year.

There are hummingbird moths.

They are very cool.

We have some up this way.

8:30pm....exited the cave. Both the dog and I immediately regretted it.

Up next, burgers and beer.

i agree. i don't like caged birds, or the crap that goes with them. i went to a wildlife center not too long ago, and saw native deer in a small cage. it just made me sad. i love seeing them out in the wild, as long as they aren't dashing out in front of the car.

I’m quite fond of my pet praying mantis. It’s gonna suck when she passes away.

Reddit is already awash in a sea of incels protesting the imminent arrival of a female Thor.....

too funny.

Not in the wild or in person. They’re not native here and when I’ve been over there I’ve never seen them. What’s so odd about that?

People are always amazed others don't have the same experiences that they do.

There's nothing odd about that. I found your original statement ambiguous and simply wanted clarification.

While not rare in my area, they are uncommon. I don't recall having seen one 'til I was well into adulthood.

In the Northern Hemisphere, they're frequently seen in the tropics where they overwinter (particularly in the Caribbean).

I fully comprehend the reaction many have to an initial exposure to a hummingbird.

When initially seen, they can be absolutely startling and a bit frightening. At first glimpse, it's easy to think one is being attacked by a terrifyingly large insect. It is only after gathering one's wits and a closer examination of the creature that one realizes it's a hummingbird.

They really are fascinating creatures with fantastic flying ability and an amazing metabolic level— all the while possessing an extraordinary capacity to adjust their metabolism in order to sleep and deal with a wide range of daily atmospheric temperature change.

I had a company house in a little mining town and it had a couple of Mexican bird of paradise bushes out front and after a couple of seasons of me pruning and fertilizing and watering them they went from little scruffy worthless Bush to big beautiful display of flowers.

I've always liked night so I was doing mostly night shifts and I would get home just after sunrise. I come home one morning and the plant is just swarmed with hummingbirds I've never seen so many. They didn't seem at all bothered by my presence. So I went and got some great close up pictures of these with multiple hummingbirds.

https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/1/19/IC_Macroglossum_stellatarum1_NR.jpg ironic...tiny hummingbird, too big to post.

My erstwhile "housekeeper*" was an avid shutterbug I was showing her the pictures and she freaks out. She hates moths. She broke the news to me these weren't tiny hummingbirds they were hummingbird moths. Personally if it looks like a hummingbird and looks like a hummingbird I don't know why it would freak her out just because she knows there moths. She was correct.

We've already learned here that I am not a good ornithologist.

*scare quotes since I spent more time cleaning up after her then the reverse. She looked good in my button-down though

In my early 20s I worked for a furniture and appliance rent to own store. Most days I ran with the collections guy and repoed furniture and... Appliances. Anyway, I've seen many nasty houses with many expensive birds. They stink! Their loud! They are certainly a fucking mess! I love birds, but only outside.

I posted elsewhere here just recently I fucking hate moths. That shit is horrific. I’m with your housekeeper.

Okay now I feel like I'm having a Deja Vu moment I swear I had a conversation with somebody about the hummingbird moth and their hate of moths. Thinking I probably have told this story before in some context.

So Que to the 10th will be here 230 years from now to close the place?

Hopefully by then he will have settled up with Rob.
