I'm narrowing down the dinner choices:

A) Taco Bell
B) Lasagna from my local joint
C) Chinese
D) A Gyro
5) Five Guys hamburger.

I haven't been by to see my Paki friends that make my Gyros in a few weeks. So maybe I'll have that and stop in to socialize and solve some of the world's problems.

Paki acquired offensive connotations in the 1960s when used by British tabloids to refer to subjects of former colony states in a derogatory and racist manner. In modern British usage "Paki" is typically a derogatory label used for all South Asians, including Indians, Afghans and Bangladeshis. To a lesser extent, it has also been applied to Arabs and others perceived to resemble South Asians. During the 60's many emigrants were also dubbed as "black" to further segregate them from the white community. Some would say such a division still exists in parts of England.

In recent times there has been a trend by second and third-generation British Pakistanis to reclaim the word, so that it can be used between young British Pakistanis, but not by outsiders, even Indians and Bangladeshis.

Hmmm... maybe it's a brit thing. I've never known it to be derogatory around here.

I'll ask them later this evening.

While the word Paki is used in derogatory terms by some people, Pakistanis do use it among them selves
.
Some 20 years ago when working in a bar next door to a Pakistani run store the owner of the store called himself Paki Pete, even leaving messages for people in the bar with that moniker for himself.

I am talking about in Britain.

I have developed a bad habit.

I keep leaving myself logged into Lit, even when I am away from my computer for a long time.

Ah, trysail
I appreciate the tidbit, muchly. Whether there is any truth to the matter ?
Who would ever know ? Oh, but what a piece, to put in the puzzle space.

talk about cultural differences!

we call them Pakistanis. unless we're racist bastards.

Traditionally there really haven't been enough Pakistanis or Indians in the States for them to have been given an insulting nickname. And most seem to be doctors or engineers. Bangladeshis are an increasing group in NYC, but I think we may be beyond the point of inventing new insults. Or maybe they haven't really gotten on the radar yet.

When I lived in the Bronx there was a street with the honorary name of "Bangla Bazaar". They even had a cricket equipment shop.

finally got around to watching room 237. i now want to hunt those people down and beat them to death with hammers. i won't of course, but i want to. they deserve it. that was some of the dumbest shit i've ever heard in my life.

I used to like "Room 222". That was a long time ago.

my parents watched that back in the day. it was almost as bad as listening to idiots claim that the shining was secretly about the holocaust or the genocide of the native americans or minotaurs or i'm just going to stop now.

crap. i was thinking of 227. my parents watched 227. the terrible sitcom with jackee and the maid from the jeffersons.

Most people these days recall Leslie Howard from his role in the film Gone With The Wind.

I never knew much about him but was startled by the absurdity of his death when I stumbled across it in William Manchester and Paul Reid's magnificent biography of Winston Churchill.

Many believe life is something of a cosmic joke (Mencken certainly did) and the story of Howard's death certainly comports with that view. Talk about random! Sheesh.

i made good burritos. i'm going to have to risk my stomach exploding 'cause one was not enough.

Tonight we went to a local multi-screen movie theater to see a live HD transmission from the New York Metropolitan Opera.

They staged Borodin's only opera Prince Igor. The familiar music is the Polotsvian Dances used in Kismet.

But Borodin never finished Prince Igor. What he left was a mess with some great music and a confusing story line.

The Met's production, with many Russians involved as producers, artists etc. actually made sense. That is a massive achievement with Prince Igor.

I am never likely to see a live performance in New York. But a live transmission is nearly as good, with a much better experience than from the less expensive seats in New York, and the cost was less than a meal for the two of us in a restaurant, in fact about the price of Big M meals for four. That is very little to pay for a world class production of opera.

If a live transmission of Opera comes to a venue near you, why not try it? It won't cost much more than standard Hollywood fare, and you might like it.

I wouldn't recommend Prince Igor for a first time - unless you are Russian.
