The lifeguard at our pool last summer was Ukrainian. He was a nice fellow around 19 years old.


The company that provides the lifeguards has given up trying to hire American teenagers. They can't find enough American teenagers who want a summer job, so they recruit in Eastern Europe.


The Ukrainian lad wanted to stay in the U.S. and go to school. He had applied for a student visa. He was from Kiev (and, thus, western Ukraine) and said his country was corrupt. My guess is that he's still in the U.S. (legal or not).


He'll never leave voluntarily; he'll have to be caught and deported.
