Jacques sat silently. He knew Paine’s reaction was from the shock of having her childhood memories torn asunder and not true anger. He thought perhaps he had gone too far and crossed into cruelty with his tale. But all he spoke was the truth. He had loved Marisa more than he could say, but she had lied to her granddaughter and filled her with foolish and dangerous fantasies. He also knew at that moment that he was in love with Paine. It was a very different love than he had ever known. He stood and slowly walked to the shivering young woman’s side.
Knelling he spoke softly, “Paine, I am sorry to have been the one to bring you the truth. I am sorry to have been the one to rip away your youth. But please understand it is my belief that those fantasies and fairytales did not serve you well that led me to lay bare the facts. I swear upon my own mother’s departed soul that every word I spoke was true. But you misunderstand when you think I feel any ill toward Marisa.”
Jacques gently massaged the broken girls shoulders as he continued to speak softly, “I do know what love is. I also know what it is not, my sweet innocent girl. God, I loved her, I love her still I think. I know she loved me too. It was no fairytale love though. We shared our love despite the horror of our lives or maybe because of it. But, oh damn, it wasn’t until I felt the things I feel for you that I discovered the awful truth. You are not the only one who has had the truth reveled here, Paine. Marisa was not a bad woman but our love was wrong. Our lives wee guided by the dark side of fate. It was the devil himself that took my mother, sent your mother to the scullery, brought me to Marisa’s bed and finally made me the monstrous master of this evil island!”
He pressed himself against the sobbing girl.
“I can naught undue any of these things. I can naught rid myself of the evil. But I can protect you from it I believe. Please forgive me for destroying your illusions, but knowing the face of evil is the only protection. Give your love to Byron. He will return it ten-fold. You can have the life you want. Let my love be the love of a protector and benefactor. I will not touch you again though it is my fondest desire to make love with you. Now I demand to know what happened to my Marisa. It is of great consequence to me. You see there is one other that she knew cared when she passed. I know she could not have died without thinking of me. Please tell me how she came to her end,” He begged.
