Have any of you seen "The Iron Chef" on The Food Network? I love this show!

Its on at 10pm Fridays and Saturdays here on the East Coast. Its a Japense import. Its like celebrity death match/pro wrestling and boxing all rolled up together as two Chefs compete to see who is the best. Each week features a new theme ingredient. (Whose cuisine reigns supreme?)

Get ready for the seaweed and giant eels to start flying as Ultimate Fighting Champion meets Julia Child in this Japanese-language hit. Each week, after the surprise ingredient is revealed, the challenger and the Iron Chef face off in a frenetic culinary battle. The guest panel judges the menus to determine who is victorious and who is vanquished. No matter whether the Iron Chef defends his title--you, the viewer, always win.

Anyway - now there is an American version with William Shatner as the host. It airs at 9pm tonight (East Coast).

Staged in a sporting event-like atmosphere, "Iron Chef USA: Showdown in Las Vegas" features frenetic culinary battles between today's most talented chefs as they race against the clock to create outstanding original cuisine in front of an audience in the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.

My husband is addicted to this show. "Can you make that honey?"
"Sweetie I can't even pronounce that. Sharks Head??"

Some of the sows on the food network I can follow the recipes and make it - but not that show. Those guys are nuts! And some of those ingredients I do not want coming anywhere near me!

Fukui San....

I wouldn't eat that stuff.
The commentators crack me up, though.

Oh yes... we laugh everytime they go to the commentators - they're hilarious! And they all treat it so seriously. I keep worrying that one of these guys will be so shamed that they decide to end it all right on the show!

I'm afraid that the American version (on in 15 minutes as I type this) will probably lose a lot of the unintentional comedy that comes across because of cultural and translation differences.

*lol* Exactly!

And, let me tell you, I don't want anything I'm eating to start doing the macarena in my mouth!

OK... it 20 minutes into the show. Its not as good as the original Iron Chef show - but its better than I had expected. Shatner is hamming/camping it up quite nicely.

My favorite moment in iron chef is when thier stadium reporter says "QUIESON!" (sp) it makes me laugh......or the creepy voices they put over the japanese people....i love that show.....Esp. since the host got his wardrobe from a Sigfried and Roy yard sale.

wish i had upn:mad:

I'm so glad you posted this.

I was afraid I'd been transported to an evil parallel universe. Now I see that it's just bad programming.
