"Hurry!" Hunter demanded as Gaia finally began his way. "We have to escape."
He looked back toward the keepers, finding them all entirely engaged with the big, dangerous lizard from another world. He snatched the female's hand and pulled her hard toward a thick section of faux-forest the enclosure's designers had attempted to make as real as any true Yuza rainforest. When he realized that a pair of the keepers had turned their attention to him and Gaia, Hunter crouched them both down behind a rock, pretending to only be hiding. One of the keepers turned back to the beast, jabbing at it with a long tranquilizer pole; the other continued to look between the beast and the Humans.
Suddenly, a surge forward by the lizard gained the attention of all 12 of the keepers. The creature slashed its tail, charged, slashed again, then lowered its horned head and charged another Yuzan. Hunter looked to the open door and found it still open but with a keeper standing near it, grasping a tranquilizer dart gun in his hands; the man seemed to be looking for the exhibits true occupants.
"Now!" Hunter said suddenly when he saw the gate's guarding keeper's attention shift to the lizard. "We go now!"
He pulled Gaia to her feet and ran for the open portal. Just before they reached it, the keeper there spotted the advancing humans. He looked panicked and only backed up initially. He finally raised the gun … but too late; Hunter slashed the blunt end of his spear through the air, catching the man with force across his temple. The man's head spun halfway around, the attack dropping him to the dirt.
Hunter didn't hesitate. He shot through the open door, dragging the still naked Gaia behind him. Their flight would have been a short one; there was, indeed, a second set of gates just a few meters past the previous one. But another keeper had unlocked that gate and was passing through it, bringing with her a more powerful tranquilizer weapon. This time, Hunter simply rammed into the female with all his momentum, knocking her hard against the wall; she, too, collapsed, knocked out.
Hunter led Gaia down a series of twisting passageways that he didn't realized were one floor beneath the park. There were no Yuza here, which was good; the doors he tried were all locked, which wasn't. Finally, they arrived at an unlocked door with a small window in it that looked out onto a park-like setting. There were dozens of visitors eating and drinking and enjoying their day, oblivious to the mayhem taking place halfway across the zoo. There was no way two Human Beings -- aliens!, one of them scantily dressed and the other naked -- could get through that crowd without being seen.
Hunter looked back down the passageway, wondering whether or not they could go back and find a way out. And then he saw the open front of a locker filled with keepers' uniforms. He smiled, snatched out some of the items, and held them out toward Gaia.
"Put on," he told her with a widening smile. "Put on … and we escape."
