I dont think so. But people keep trying to draw parallels. What are they and why?

I wish I could answer this right now but my body and brain are telling me it is nap time.

I will say (for now) that I feel certain that future historians will draw a parallel between these two events. Some of the points are obvious, others less so.

No

Equivalent? Hardly.

The entire world (except for this sleeping giant) was at war. Pearl Harbor was (and is) a military installation, which was attacked by a military force. Those that died were in the armed forces--aware of the inherent risks that went with the job (even in "peace time"). And at the time, Hawaii wasn't even a state, but an overseas outpost.

In spite of US involvement in various "hot spots," the world was generally at peace. The World Trade Center was not a military site; the attackers were 5th columnists--weren't showing their colors. The people who went to work there that morning had no reason to fear such a despicable thing. And I think even if the loss of life was equal, if this had happened to Americans in Africa or Asia, the reaction wouldn't be the same.

Surprise, that's the only similarity.

Equivalent? That is a question that cannnot be anwered for some time.

Both events shocked America into becoming very involved indeed in the events of the wider world. I think that the USA would have become involved in the second world war eventually, but this was hastened by Pearl Harbour. The attacks on the World Trade Center have brought the idea of terrorism home to the many, if not most of the American people.

What the upshot of that will eventually be I cannot say.

I think NewJersey Cit said it for me.

Also, the motivation the attacks are very different.
