THE INDOMITABLE RUSH LIMBAUGH. It's no surprise that some major media outlets are reporting on Rush Limbaugh's death with a negative tone and backhanded tributes. The New York Times, which spent decades denouncing Limbaugh, published a headline that read: "Rush Limbaugh Dies at 70; Turned Talk Radio Into a Right-Wing Attack Machine." The Times described Limbaugh's immensely popular radio presence as a "divisive style of mockery, grievance and denigrating language." Some NeverTrumpers, nursing more recent resentments, have pounced as well.

Start with this question: Who has been the most important conservative in America for the more than 30 years since Ronald Reagan left the White House? The answer is not a president, not a congressional leader, not a Supreme Court justice. It is Limbaugh, whose daily radio program guided millions of listeners through the tangle of American politics in the years of George H.W. Bush, Bill Clinton, Newt Gingrich, Al Gore, George W. Bush, John McCain, Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid, Barack Obama, Mitt Romney, Charles Schumer, Donald Trump, and now Joe Biden. Leaders came and went; Limbaugh's voice was a steady beacon.

And through it all, Limbaugh stayed on top of the world. What his enemies never understood was that there was no gimmick to explain Limbaugh's success. Instead, he was a uniquely talented man who early in life found the perfect outlet for those talents. And he embraced, instinctually and intellectually, a conservative philosophy that resonated with millions of Americans, from the Reagan years through the end of the Trump presidency.

"Rush was a patriot, a defender of liberty, and someone who believed in all the greatness our country stands for," former President Trump said Wednesday. "His honor, courage, strength, and loyalty will never be replaced."

I would agree with most of what that snippet says about him. He was a constant and highly influential voice that shaped the current conservative culture of this country. He did have a natural talent, and he did find an ideal manner to use it. Unfortunately his talent was recognizing weaknesses in the psyche of conservative Americans. He saw opportunities to exploit those weaknesses in nearly the exact manner that trump did in more recent years. His influence was immense to be sure, but unfortunately his main legacy is that he proved to be one of the most potent catalysts for deepening the ideological divide in our country, and magnifying the personal significance of those differences. Sadly he was a man with a lot of anger, and his anger was infectious to those who agreed and disagreed with him.

I do not like to kick a guy when they are down, and he has now passed on, so I am not interested in listing his myriad of flaws and offenses or calling him a bunch of names. At the same time, there is no justification to elevate him as a better man than who he was, nor to try and re-write history and define his legacy based on what his admirers would like it to be. He was not a particularly healthy man, nor did he have a healthy contribution to American culture; and that’s being rather kind. I don’t think it’s right to attack him as a person now that he’s gone; but I do think it’s essential that we are honest about the damages he caused, and the lessons offered in how to address the dangerously polarized culture we are living in.

This is probably true, but it's fascinating that this isn't being said as mockery, but as something you're actually proud of.

That was exactly my thoughts. Really? This is who you want to "lead?"

.
Yeah, no.....

Cancer dominated his vile ass pretty completely.

Of course Cancer from smoking is just a democrat hoax, just ask Rush..... Oh, wait....

Yeah, Joseph Goebbels was treated similarly by the press after he died.

So unfair, so unfair... :(

Lung cancer is an aweful death...lots of suffering. I feel for almost all folks who have it....not so much in this case. Especially, since he floated smoking and links to cancer as political.

Dmitri, I'm honestly surprised you actually believe he is dead. I had figured by now you'd quote some Extremist Daily News Network article that claimed he was actually alive, and his death was actually "Fake News" propagated by the "Liberal Media" (sic) as a smear campaign.
