The "I Didn't Get Laid Today" Thread

Try 2 years . . . so far.

Try virginity. >_>

Today, in lieu of getting laid, I went with my vocal band to a studio so that we could record our latest CD.

We are a college-based a cappella group catering primarily to other college students, so we do stuff like this--both in the repertoire choice (Top 40) and in the sense that we are too cheap to buy instruments, so instead we sing everything. (Psst: don't believe the announcer: the linked recording is not live and is not "no sound effects" either: the noise floor is too non-existent for anything but a studio recording, and the blend, pitch-bend and octavizing are too obvious for anything but computer-based aftereffects. This is not to say that they are not supremely talented, because they are; it is simply to say that if they were to perform in front of you, they would sound just as human as anyone else.)

It's only our second CD, and practice habits have not been very good as of late: almost half the group is graduating seniors, and they typically have more important things to do than come to practice. Plus, there were some interesting obstacles placed on us. Any recording engineer worth his salt would tell you that, to get the sort of really clean sound we hear on the radio, you need to record one performer at a time: they go in, they do what they do, you pull them out, you repeat the process until you have all the pieces, and then you use your computer program (typically Pro Tools) to stitch it together into an actual song. (For instance, if you listen to this Avril Lavigne number starting at about 2:50, you'll notice that whenever she sings the high crescendo, it's actually the same take, copy-pasted four times. This sort of sleight-of-hand is Business As Usual for professional musicians today.) But my group absolutely refused. We tried it for one song, they hated it, and insisted that we do everything live--all thirteen of us, singing at once, the way we're used to performing. And, to be fair, we're not bad live. But we're not great either. And a CD is not a live performance. When you listen to a CD, you expect it to be perfect. And the problem is that once you record live, the cake is baked: if something got messed up, you can't take it out, and you probably can't fix it.

So, obviously, we had two very different standards as to what the CD should sound like. Nonetheless, we managed to work out a compromise which, I hoped, would give everyone what they wanted: me (the engineer), each person's voice on an individual track, so that if someone was too loud (namely, me) or out-of-key, I could fix it; them, the chance to sing as a group. This required 13 individual microphones, which (as any recording engineer worth his salt will tell you) is an acoustic nightmare; the chances of someone's voice besides yours getting picked by your microphone--and thus, getting baked into the cake--is astronomical. This in addition to our relative lack of practice, and I was nervous. I mean, $300 is a lot to waste by not being ready.

So nobody is more astounded than I at how well it turned out. In fact, I don't think the other members of the group actually realize how well it turned out. They think we sound as good as the Voca People track I linked to up above.

The thing is, they're right. We stayed in-key, we stayed in-tempo, we were incredibly well-prepared (much more so than I expected), and we made it through all 16 of our numbers despite having only 4 hours to sing--getting all the equipment set up took 33% of our allotment. We're pretty fucking good. We're certainly as good as these Voca People people if we put our mind to it.

And that's the astounding part.

The other members think this kind of talent grows on trees. They know we're good, but they have no idea how bad we actually ought to be. They have no idea we're ahead of the curve, much less how far ahead we are.

Didn't get laid. But that's okay, for once.

Waaah...nothing since Sunday. Well, except by myself. It's far less satisfying to lick your fingers afterward if nobody is watching.

I hate all this summery weather, I can't concentrate on anything aside from how wet I constantly am.

not for myself no but I did give a blowjob yesterday and my dreams last night were hot enough to scorch the uk and half the east coast of the states!

Yeh, I didn't get laid today, either. I just came from a wedding. Has anybody ever hooked up at a wedding? Like with somebody they didn't go to the wedding with. They say its a great place and time to meet somebody, but I've never. Have you?

Yes, and more than once.....a cousin sent me an invitation and a personal note asking that I not get drunk, pick up a bridesmaid, make a spectacle of myself......no such luck.....I had a great time and married the bridesmaid......meantime......

Nope. Everyone I meet at weddings is either family or married already.

I didn't get laid today. I was with a bunch of gay guys. Although I totally would have fucked a few of them if they wanted to try something different.
