THE HUNTER by Donald Westlake

5 STARZ

Its the first installment of his PARKER Series that spanned maybe 40 years.

The Plot: Parker is betrayed by his wife and business partner and set up for murder to steal 100K from him. The rest is Parkers vendetta to kill everyone involved and get his money back. The delicate reader hates it when Parker kicks his wife's ass, its not a kind or gentle ass whuppin.

Two movies were based on the book: POINT BLANK with Lee Marvin, and PAYBACK with Mel Gibson

Payback was damn good I thought

I watched a version of it the other night and it had been censored so bad that it wasn't even close to the same story. I will have to check this guy out, thanks for the info.

I love all of the Parker books that Westlake (under the pen name Richard Stark) wrote. The first ten are the best in my opinion, particularly Slayground. All of them are gems waiting to be discovered for fans of Crime Noir.

Darwyn Cooke also released graphic novel versions of three or four of the novels and there was a movie last year, Parker, featuring Jason Statham that was adapted from the novel Flashfire. It was only average I thought, though.

Tough to capture in any other media what Westlake put down on the page. But I did like both of the other movies, particularly the Lee Marvin version. (Big fan of all Lee Marvin movies, especially Emperor of the North). And there is also the added bonus of watching a young Angie Dickinson at work in Point Blank, so sexy and so beautiful.

I still watch Payback every now and again - great fucking movie.

Going to have to grab the book and give it a whirl - currently going through a pile of alternate Cthulu books and some alternate super's before I add anything to my "you've got to read this pile".
