Victor adjusted as she pulled away, he waited till her words stopped, the wolf had shifted from seeming terrifying to terrified, he wanted to do more for her, to ease her pain to make her feel safe. He knew she would run if he gave her the reason. He moved closer to her, he sat beside her, this back to the woods, he rested his arm around the wolf, his hand massaging between her ears.
“I can’t stop the humans from coming, they already outnumber us, the will continue to do so. But that doesn’t mean they will hunt us or that they will find us if we don’t want too. There are many far-off places we could go, may place to den and raise our pack.”
He sighed, he hated telling her that, it was the truth but not an easy one to accept. He took a deep breath to ease some of the weight on his shoulders.
“I know I didn’t do the right thing that night, I won’t ever make up for it with words, but if you don’t give me the chance to do it with my actions I can’t make it right. Rebecca was a risk, but she would have died in that village, she would have suffered and then had a senseless death. She loves you, and I think you love her too. Something happened while I was trapped, you gave her the gift, you made her your pup.”
He rubbed the base of her eats, he could feel the tension in her skin, her muscles seemed to tighten and relax as he massaged her. Victor leaned his head against Starfyre.
“You know I love you, I want to prove to you that the world is safe for us, that humans like Amos, Charles, and Tabitha are more common than you think, that you have a place alongside them. Who knows what the future will be, but I want you to be with me and not hidden away from the world. I want the humans that we choose to allow into our lives will prove that they can protect us, just like they are guarding our bodies right now.”
He squeezed the wolf, a very human action against the wild that the wolf represents.
“Wake up, see them for yourself, you can talk through me or direct to them, but you need to see them.”
Victor, as his wolf, put his nose to the ground a bit early, he didn’t quite count the full bit, but they never set a number to count too. He caught a mild scent of her, but something was obscuring it. He chased her scent into the woods, bouncing around trees and under bushes, she was clever running in circles that way. He figured she rubbed something on her body to mask her scent, but she had forgotten to cover her feet, it wasn’t a strong trail, but it was easy enough to follow. He followed her path, taking his time to draw her suspense out. He eventually found a large boulder lying in a small clearing in the woods, he could see the disturbed ground where Aspen had crawled under the rock. He could have stuck his head under the rock and found her but, he made a show of sniffing around the area, looking up at the trees and looking very confused, he wandered off into the tree line, getting out of sight of the rock before tracking around it. He found a flattened area on the side of the rock where he could hide, he waited, watching Aspen’s hiding hole to see if the girl would come out. His mind wandered a bit as he tried to focus on his task.
“Why is my tail itchy……..”
