I feel sorry for those who were born into it, for those who ran away to escape abuse, who were kicked out as kids, for those who took new drugs before we knew how bad they fucked you up, and the mentally ill.

But I will never, ever, ever be homeless.

I never ever ever thought my family would have ended up homeless.

Of all I've seen and been through, I've learned not to judge immediately and that there are just some things that while you can take every possible precaution, you just cannot predict anything.

I've talked about it here before, and like dolf, I learned much and often still wonder what happened to some of the men, women, and families I'd met along the way. One thing I swore I wouldn't ever say again was, "never". My family and I were fortunate in that someone in a county program decided to give us a break.

In Cali, there are zero programs for homeless peope who are simply down on their luck. You have to either have a criminal record or be a battered woman-of which my family was neither.

I'm another one that believes in helping ... but I have to admit in some circumstances I'm a bit leery. Especially with my daughter around, in some circumstances I'm afraid of getting mugged. Somewhat shameful, I guess.

I always give a little something, usually a pound coin, and if they've got a dog I'll pop in the shop and buy it something too, a few chews, a couple of tins of dog food or a pigs ear to chew on to break it's boredom.
I especially like the buskers, if I've got time I always stop and listen for a bit and throw them a quid.

A lot of the homeless over here (Britain) are ex soldiers and they get no help from the government, our government prioritises helping immigrants over people that have fought for our country. It pisses me right off.
