I thought your prose was good and often wonderfully luxuriant. However, the story has too many implausibilities to accept, even allowing a bit for suspension of disbelief.

One fact that seemed missing was how long Michael had been gone.

I like narrative surprises (anything to make a story not read like any of several I may have read before), but to get to the ending one has to accept Michael's emerging out of nowhere at night and torrid sex in which the woman isn't sure if she's dreaming or not. That's a bit too much.
