ive been gone for a few days (computer problems) but i wanted to pop my head in for a few minutes while i am borrowing a friends computer.

hannukah starts sundown tonight, and i wanted to say happy hannkah to all the jews on the board, and latkes and dreidels for everyone!!!

Press your grated potato under books and towel paper before you fry so they're not super soggy. Those are my words of widsom.

8 days of gifts and a divine exhortation to eat fried potato. This rocks.

Happy Hannukah from a gentile :)

(ETA: Latkes are the win. Tasty.)

my hannukah tadgedy this year, i dont have a menorah :( this is the first time im sending all 8 days away from my family, so my mother mailed me up my electric menorah to have in my room (no lit candles allowed on campus) but it hasnt gotten here yet.

8 days of gifts?

Where do i sign up?

Do you think the Jews will take an agnostic (really a lapsed Catholic)?

Say yes. Please.

Happy Hannukah, Peeps! :D

There certainly are. We're everywhere!

Also , not that you were serious, but it actually is kind of tough to convert.

Also, just as a sort of public service announcement, for those who may be interested (which may very well be none of you, in which case, uh, TITS or something equally distracting), Chanukah is a rather minor Jewish holiday. It is not at all the equivalent of Christmas, though some (primarily) American Jews tend to play it up so they and/or their kids don't feel left out.

A lot of well-intentioned Christmas celebrants (whether Christian or not), in a burst of holiday joy and spirit will often implore their Jewish friends to bring some latkes to their Christmas party, or teach them all about Chanukah in an effort to learn about Judaism. Don't be surprised if some jews are put off by this. It's not that the spirit isn't appreciated, but it's tough to really get into the "holiday spirit" when this just isn't that important a holiday, or time of year for us.

And yes, I tend to take Jewish identity issues fairly seriously. Sorry if I sound all bah humbug-esque. It's just something very important to me.

Anyway, having said that, I am lighting the candles, saying the prayers, and making the latkes tonight. My kidlet will be opening presents as well, americana-style ;) and I've got plenty o' gelt. On the downside, I have no idea where the dreidel is. Phooey.

I've a Jewish friend that keeps trying to get me to "Join the Zionist Conspiracy". Unfortunately it involves becoming a heanchman in some remote mountain fortress in Canada. I don't hench well, so no Zionist Conspiracy for me :(

Yes. If you really give a crap about our culture, come to Seder or think about Yom Kippur. If you want to party, it's Purim.

But I think it's even worse for Muslims, I've seen people trying to turn Eid into a "happy holidays" kind of thing. Argh.

Ah yes, and do you want to run the media, after all? Takes a lot of work, I'll tell you that for free (but not much else, you know us jews).

Purim is my favorite holiday. And yeah, although for my Muslim friend, people are never sure if they should welcome her into the holiday spirit, or take her out back and shoot her. Ok, not really, but people do say ridiculous things to her all the time.

New to the BDSM Cafe, but I'm gonna say "right back at you," anyway.

I LOVED Purim as a kid. Getting to dress up, getting to make all that noise in synagogue... LOVED it.

*shrug* He was talking about a really nice benefits package, retirement fund, snazzy henchman jumpsuits, etc. I just really got hung up on the title. "Henchman", not very glamourous, y'know? If I could've been an interrogator or inquisitor or something, that would've been better.

Henchman, meh.

Happy Hanukah to all who celebrate. As for going to a Seder: any time, any place. The one thing that I agree on about religion is that it's at its best over dinner.
