I hope Marxist doesn't mind me borrowing and expanding on his idea but here goes.

What is the greatest sports franchise of all time.

The Yankees with 30 some penants and 26-27 championships.
The Boston Celtics with 15-16 championships.
The Dallas Cowboys with 8 or 9 Superbowl apperences with 5 wins.
The Montreal Canadians with championships numbering in the teens.
The Toronto MapleLeafs with championships also numbering in the teens.
The Minneapolis/LA Lakers with numerous championships
The Chicago Bulls with 6 championships in 8 years.
Notre Dame football the pinnacle of college football
UCLA basketball the pinnacle of college basketball

How about the Green Bay Packers, owned by the community, who won countless championships before the merger of the NFL and AFL and 3 since the merger?

was going to say that ... for their world wide sales they are the most profitable "soccer" team in the world not sure how that profit compares to american sports though

Just to throw a small wild card in.. No major junior team in Canada has matched the consistant sucess that the Swift Current Broncos franchise has had over the last 25 or so years.. In a league where player turnover is as frequent as NCAA football, the Broncos making the playoffs for 20+ years in a row is something outsanding.

Pro sports wise though, How can you go against Les Habs and their 24 cups?

Try Real Madrid for success!

C'mon you all....it's got to be the Lakers? Sure the Yankees have dominated baseball but let's be honest. If you give me 100 million dollars to spend a year and that's 2x as much as every other team...it will be more interesting to see if I don't win than if I do.

The Yankees have a freakin monopoly...it's impossible for them not to win 2 out of every 3 seasons.

The Lakers on the other hand have played in a league full of competition. The Celtics, Pistons, 76ers, Bucks, Bulls, Knicks and Jazz have througout the past 40 years at one time or another had teams that could call itself one of the best ever.

Yet the Lakers have managed to rise above them all. Sure the Celtics have more Championships but look at the NBA today. The razzle-dazzle grace over gerth style the Lakers played in the 80s is just now being duplicated by the rest of the league. No team has had as many great players as the Lakers. Magic Johnson and Kareem Abdul Jabaar are the best two players ever to play there positions. Shaquille O'Neal and Jerry West are arguably the second best to ever play theirs.

The legacy of LA is also what makes them great. While Utah has never been in the Lottery they also have never won a championship. The Lakers have floundered at times only to rise again to championship greatness...

oh..and they have Shaq!

*dunk*

How can you like the Lakers? They are a franchise that moved from where they started. That is an automatic disqualification.
