Oh my that is one to ponder. What does NOT getting a beating do for me when I think I really need it? I'd have to say ALL of the ABOVE. It can both focus me and distract me, it all depends. (on a lot of things)...

...Like I said, it all depends on so many things.

Great post and only snipped for brevity. I hope others will read it in it's entirity.

I have to just say ditto to it all.

Thanks Cait.

A shot in the dark from one of the bdsm virgins. Please don't eat me or flay me alive or anything if I'm way off base here.

Perhaps when life is "being that way", frazzled and crazy, you need something physical to ground yourself in reality. I asked a maso-sub; she says that purely physical sensation clears her mind and makes it easier to focus on "real life" when she's had a really hot scene. When life is really awful, she'll ask him to beat her 'til she cries (in a good way). After the emotional release, she is more able to cope. I frequently hit the gym when I'm feeling all out sorts and just concentrate on my body and what it's doing. I have a feeling this may be a similar sort of thing. But it's probably a lot more fun her way!

I guess what I'm trying to say is, perhaps putting the world on hold and indulging in hormones and emotions and exertion is kind of like an emotional oil change. It gets all the guck out and makes it easier for you to function.

Anyhoo, that's my .02 cents in this. Hope I made some sense.
