So many people to feel sorry for... to mourn for... I don't believe I've seen anyone mention the firefighters yet... over 300 unaccounted for... heroes...

And their families...

And - the devastation to NYC's ability to respond to emergencies... fires... will take time to rebuild.

Over 30 police officers missing as well...

Agreed

I am not much for those moment of silence things but i think this deserves one.

Please pause for a moment of silence on the board.

No posting for one minute.

I will put this at the top of the board right after this.

well said. My father is a police officer and I feel lucky that he is safe here in our state. Part of me can only think what their familes are going through. prehaps thats why I can not sleep tonight. I keep thinking.

A Fireman's Prayer

When I am called to duty, God
whenever flames may rage;
Give me strength to save some life,
whatever be it's age.

Help me embrace a little child
before it is too late
Or save an older person from the
horror of that fate.

Enable me to be alert and hear the
weakest shout,
And quickly and efficiently to put
the fire out.

I want to fill my calling and to
give the best in me
To guard my every neighbor and
protect his property.

And if, according to my fate, I am
to lose my life,
Please bless with your protecting
and my children and my wife.

Firefighters are the true everyday heroes

That's what gets me the most... people died trying to save other people. People who save lives EVERY day died for this terrorist's act.

And they are still out there - doing whatever it takes to save even one more life...

Over 260 firefighters believed dead in NYC... including the chief...

Well, yes -

I've been freaking out about them the whole time. This must be as many line-of-duty fatalities as the NYC Fire Department suffers in 50 to 75 years! Entire units are wiped out. For some reason this is the worst aspect of it all. Perhaps it's because it's so painful to picture them (and the cops and EMTs who may have accompanied them) climbing all those stairs, with all that gear, as people try to race downstairs past them. They entered those buildings, weighted down, climbed into the smoke, and as far as I can tell, most of them died. It's got to be one of the biggest losses for the city, for humanity.

Those who are up there right now are facing great peril. Every second is a second of hope, but reality... They could be killed too, trying to save lives.

It is so hard to imagine that job in general, for me, without tearing up. :(

I saw an interview this morning with a firefighter who had come down from Mass. who was upset that he had been pulled off the line after working 12 hours searching for others.

I don't know how we begin to show our appreciation for those still facing the task of digging out thru the rubble. Watching the news yesterday, it was pointed out that many of the nurses and doctors in the hospitals are married to police and firefighters. But both went on doing their jobs, not sure what was happening to their spouses. God Bless those who gave their lives to save other, my prayers go to lifting up their families and friends.

They are the heros that I will teach to my children, they're the people we owe our lives, and humanity, to. They renew faith everyday.

The news said not that long ago that a rescue worker was pulled out of the wreckage. He was on the 80 something floor and rode the tower all the way down. All I can say is WOW.

Last I heard on CNN, they had found six firefighters and three police officers still alive. Whether or not that is accurate, no one knows.

The dedication of these and all rescue workers is incredible. Every time they respond, they know they are putting themselves in harm's way, still they go. May the powers that be protect them all.

While watching tv this morning, I said to my husband, who has been a firefighter for 25 years that those men were heros. He looked at me with tears in his eyes and said..."If those men could speak they would tell you.. WE are not heros.. we were doing what we loved to do... we were doing our jobs." I agree that those men are heros, but most firefighters don't believe they are. So if you happen to see a firefighter... no matter if they are in NY or Mississippi.. let them know they are doing a Hell of a job!

Hug your hubby for me......no hell give him a big KISS!! Doctors are often credited with saving lives(and they do, not taking anything away from them) But how many times was it a Fireman that got the victim out so the Doctor could do his best. A big THANK YOU to all Firemen on the planet.;)

Firefighters & Police Officers are heros to me & my family. They give so much to all of us. There will never be enough words to express my admiration for them. Our local police & fire departments did so much for me 2 years ago, they went way beyond the call of duty. They may think they are just doing their job, but it is one of the hardest jobs anyone can do. Give your hubby a big hug from my whole family here in Texas.

I too feel the pain for these rescue crews. I myself am a firefighter/EMT. My department is sending a truck and full crew to NYC tomorrow to help with search and rescue. I will be one of the crew. I don't think I will sleep well tonight thinking of what awaits me tomorrow.

God bless this country...
