I was in work today and working with one of my favorite R.N.'s
Jo is a lovely woman. When I say lovely I'm not talking in the American Ideal but in my own view. She is my height, she is a bit thin, she is my age and she has some scars. Currently she is single because her husband left her for a younger model. (The damned fool.)
We had a patient who is post operative. we were walking her in an effort to get her to pass gas. Jo was acting a bit strange, she seemed uncomfortable. I was about to ask her what was going on when the patient squeaked one out. The patient was mortified by this and Jo and I were working hard to make her feel comfortable with this when Jo started laughing at something that was said.
Yes Jo got the giggles which triggered her own bodies response. Now we're not talking about one of those polite little squeaks. Hell we're not even talking about one of those SBD's you can try to avoid responsibility for. We're talking about one of those foghorns that rattle windows and cloud the air. We're talking about one of those they can hear in the next county. We're talking about one of those check your drawers window melters.
The patient was relieved in more ways than one and we got her back to her room. We got her settled in her recliner and Jo took off with this mortified look on her face. Jo wasn't embarrassed, she was mortified.
I watched and I waited. I bided my time. Finally I got Jo aside.
Now Jo isn't stupid, she's an R.N. and she has a lot of experience. I knew what had to be done and I had the situation well in hand. I knew what I had been eating lately and I could feel my own bodies response.
I got Jo to the side at the end of the hall. She couldn't meet my eyes aas I asked her what was bothering her. (Like I didn't know.) We stood there talking for a couple of minutes before I let loose with a wall shaker. Jo stood there looking at me in shock for a minute before she started laughing.
Before I knew it her laughing turned to tears as she held onto me.She cried on my shoulder, she told me about what had been happening in her life even as we vented. I held her close as we clouded the air.
Jo is a hurting lady and yet she trusts me. She knows my wife and respects her. She accompanied me out to the parking garage and kissed me good night even as she told me she was looking forward to working with me tomorrow.
When I got home my wife showed me the Text Message Jo had sent her as well as her response. Somehow I get the feeling Jo will be visiting us in the near future.
