Tomorrow starts the play-offs for the World Series and as an Atlanta girl, not born but raised here, I am happy the Braves are going again. Sadly they did not get home field advantage but they made it.

We were sad that the Indians did not make it, my honey was born and raised in Cleveland, which leads me to ask.

Did your team make it to the play-offs?

Poor, sorry, little Braves lover. Your long run as National League Big Dog falls a little short this year, as the Boys from Flushing rise to the top of the baseball world.

Respectfully Yours,
R Nitelight

My mistake...

I knew there wasn't a chance in Hell this strand was about the obscure English experimental-punk band, The Fall - authors of such "classic" songs as 'How I Wrote Elastic Man', 'The Man Whose Head Expanded', 'Oswald Defence Lawyer', 'Bingo Master Breakout', 'Kicker Conspiracy' and 'Spoilt Victorian Child' - but I thought it was my duty to check.

Sorry about the interuption. Please carry on with the sports fun.

Hey Rog, I'm cool with everything you said in your e-mail and I'll get back to you real soon. But stay off the sports threads, will ya? Baseball isn't within the realm of your expertise, indoor contact sports. Just because you did it with Gingersnap and several other young ladies on this board in the woods you think you're some sort of expert on "sex with trees" or something, just because you got a woody.

I'm not really much of a baseball fan, Juliangel, but I will watch the playoffs and world serious. My dad used to drag me and my siblings to games way back when.

I get WGN and TBS off my dish and I'll occasionally watch the games. Maddox and Glavine are cute and I loved their "Girls dig the long-ball" bit. They should have said "long-balling" though. I like Sammy and the Cubs, particularly the 7th inning stretch singing. Mike Ditka and George Foreman were two of my favorites. And Terry Mulhholland (sp?) who is now with the Braves, when he was with the Cubs his girlfriend sang the anthem. OMG, she was terrible! Probably nervous and who wouldn't be. I felt so bad for her.

I hate the Yankees and the Mets. Go Braves! I also like the Cardinals. And in the American League, go Sex, 'er I mean Sox.

woohooo Baseball!

I absolutely LIVE for baseball season. The fact that the season's coming to an end puts a bit of a damper on the post season for me, even if one of my fav teams DO make it, which they didn't this year. Being an Ohio gal, I have to back-up my Reds and Indians.

On a side note, I'm American Indian and I DO NOT feel that chief wahoo, or the name of their team is degrogatory to my nationality. I actually get pretty upset at seeing so many of my people standing outside the stadium protesting. I feel there are way more worthwhile causes to spend such precious time and energy on. Okay, okay, I'm getting off my soapbox now, sorry. :)

I was also disappointed to see the Indians not make the playoffs. As a Pittsburgher, there's nothing I enjoy more than seeing another Cleveland sports team choke in the post season, and that's one more joy I'll miss out on this year.

Deborah, did you say you actually like Sammy?? I know chicks dig long-ballin' like you said, but damn, watch that guy play right field sometime. God, is he lazy out there. I was at 2 Cubs - Pirates games this year, and both games I saw the Bucs put big innings together cause Sammy wasn't hustling in right field. First game I was at I saw 3 balls just drop in out of his reach that should have been routine. Yesterday I saw him drop a hit in the right field corner that shoulda been an easy triple (John van der Waal isn't the quickest guy in right field) and what does Sammy do? A little home run style trot in to second base looking over his shoulder the whole time to see if anyone's gonna ever get over to field that ball. Ya know, it's great he can hit home runs, but how many runs are being scored cause he's not fielding his position??

Anyways, I was at the final Pirates game at Three Rivers Stadium last night, and they were just bringing out the nostalgia as quick as they could. I thought it was kinda ironic that they went to all this trouble to say good-bye to a stadium that everyone hates. LOL - they were even calling the day's festivities "Kiss it Good-bye". A lot of great sports moments happened in that Stadium over the last 30 1/2 years, but I know I'll be damn glad to see it go away. Even now I can't think of one good thing to say about that place. The Nachos Grande are pretty good, but they same food services company will be working at PNC Park, so it's not like I'm losing the nachos or anything... That I woulda been upset about.

Well, if you're looking for something to do, plans are for imploding Three Rivers Stadium on Feb 18. Should be a lot of fun, the new Steelers stadium is being built 58 ft away!

My, how those Steelers fans get pushy after one win. You're still looking up at our Brownies though! Will Kordell be strapped to a pillar when they implode Three Rivers?

Actually, my Indians saved me the usual October Heartbreak that I have put up with for the last couple of years. This malady is very similar to the Pittsburgh variant, April Heartbreak. I couldn't believe that the Pirates fired their manager today. Nobody did a better job of getting his team into midseason form than that guy. They stunk early, often, and predictably.

We could really reach for The Fall Classic and discuss Albert Camus. There couldn't possibly be a better forum for absurdity and the benign indifference of the universe.

Not this guy - I'm still absolutely pissed that they won that game yesterday. How the hell are you supposed to finish with the worst record in the NFL (and secure that #1 draft pic) if you start winning road games against better teams?? This damn Steeler team can't even suck right!! Hell, they had every thing set up for a nice healthy blow out yesterday and they blew it. And I have this nagging suspicion that they're going to beat the Jets this week too. Then the whole season will be fucked.

Will Kordell be strapped to a pillar when they implode Three Rivers

No, he will not.

It's very important to the people of Pittsburgh to have a QB that we can hate on a very deep and personal level. We really, really, really wanted to hate Bradshaw, but then he went and won all those damn Super Bowls and we had to sit around and wait for Cliff Stoudt - then we were happy goddammit! We had a nice run after that - Stoudt, David Woodley, Mark Malone, and Bubby Brister. Guys you could really hate! I can still remember a sunday night game in 1990 when Bubby throw a damn ball over Eric Green's head from less than 10 yards away, and Green was standing wide open in the endzone!! God, did Bubby suck!

Then the whole Neil O'Donnel thing happened. We were really, really, really excited about hating him after those 2 interceptions he threw in Super Bowl XXX. And what happened?? The cocksucker goes off and signs with the damn Jets right after the Super Bowl and we never did get a chance to properly hate him. I still feel cheated.

But now we've got Kordell and I'll be damned if we're gonna let him get away. Not until we've got a replacement, at least. Kent Graham's too likeable - he's big and slow and gets the crap beat out of him on every play, but he still gets back up. Pixburgher's like that. And Tee Martin is still the #3 guy - and the damn Yinzers just love that #3 QB, that guy can never do wrong - just look at what happened with Scott Campbell if you don't believe me.

Actually, my Indians saved me the usual October Heartbreak that I have put up with for the last couple of years

Heartbreak? You want Heartbreak??? Jeez... Try watching Sid Bream score from second base on Orlando Cabrera's single to left field with 2 out in the bottom of the 9th in game 7 of the NLCS after you've just come back from being down 3 games to 1 and you watched Bob Walk (!) pitch the game of his life in game 5 and Doug Drabek pitch the game of his life for the first 8 innings of Game 7... Jesus Christ!!! SID FUCKING BREAM!!! Do you realize how fucking slow that guy was??????? And he was wearing a fucking knee brace the size of ALASKA!!!!!!!!!!

Lemme tell ya, that's Heartbreak.

The Indians losing in October? Hell, that's just Cleveland.

Sorry, Debz. Miss Ginjah sent me in here so I could learn how to get to third base.

Oooh, Ron. You're such an Outsider. Haha. (*sports fans, please ignore this terrible literary in-joke*)

Good luck with third base, Roger, but the way Gingah tells it you got a big bat but you can't find the sweet spot. You might want to stick with cricket and kilt-weaving.

Lasher, I don't care if Sammy can field or not. That display he put on in that home-run contest before the All Star game was awesome, just like Big Mac the year before. It was these two who got me somewhat interested in baseball again two years ago.

I didn't watch a minute of the Steelers game but I saw the highlights. That play by Plaxico was dumber than dumb. The most intelligent play I've seen this year was Curtis Martin running right and throwing a TD pass to Wayne Crebet (sp?). Right after he ran right for about six yards. Absolutely brilliant. So I'll take the Jets, Lasher. Go get all your money out of the bank.

You know what Pirate fans do way up there in right center field under the clock? Smoke dope. Really. Not much else to do.

<singing> Put me in coach! I'm ready to play, today!

I've also been a big Braves fan for a long time, even before I moved to Atlanta! It has become routine for the Braves to make it to the World Series. It has also become routine for Cox to choke in the World Series. For example, last year he left Maddux in for 8 1/2 innings during the series! Come on Bobby! Maddux is a great pitcher for 6-7 innings. We ALL know that. The braves had the game until inning #8 and Maddux let several score. Thanks Bobby! Maybe that explains why we have only won ONE World Series and something like 9-10 division titles.

Any way, I'll be here rooting for my boys with my fingers crossed and cussin' Bobby every step of the way!

So glad I am not the only one who thinks he leaves pitchers in too long.

I'm just sayin'...

If you KNOW your pitcher is good for 6 innings, why, WHY, WHY!! do you decide to leave him in for 8 1/2??!!!

But that stunt that sent Smoltz in as a relief during the playoffs last year was BRILLIANT. That is the kind of coaching we need, unfortunatly, ol' Bob has used up his brilliant coaching quota for the decade!

Fuck it i'm jumpin on the bandwagon.

GO A's!!!

A friend from highschool plays for them. I just dont have any affinity for, or affiliation with the rest of the contenders sooo........

GO A's!!!

Happily, my beloved New York Mets managed to gain a split on the road against the Giants. Fortunately, they are now headed home, and I hope they can sweep the two games at Shea so that they don't have to make another trip West.

Another thread on the fall classic. Hooray!

"Look at me...I can be centerfield!"

Wanna add my two cents too......huge baseball fan here in the home of MLB where we played well above everyone's expectations last year and way below this year.

While I certainly hated your team last year Mr Nitelight- most specifically the one game playoff (we wuz robbed)- they sure looked great last night. What an exciting finish. Congrats to the Metsies for that one.

I'm just sitting around waiting for my girlfriends to come pick me up to go party. Thank you Lord I'm not designated driver tonight. Just watched Seattle beat the Sox in the last of the ninth. Yesterday I came home from work and flipped on the tube and watched Big Mac (Woo! Woo!) smack one. Then I got so bored at the VP debate after an hour I clicked over and saw the end of the Met/Giants game.

Still not my favorite kind of balling but pretty exciting stuff.

The Mets are gonna get their asses kicked by the Cardinals, R Nitelight. And I hope the Yankees win the American League Playoffs so they can get their asses kicked by the Cardinals in the World Serious. Can't wait to see Bic Mac DH.

Hey Lasher, you should have bet me on the Steelers vs. Jets. If they keep this up I'm going to have to start watching the games again, but not if Kent Graham starts. At least Kordell is either very good or very bad. Graham just plain sucks.

Atlanta Braves--team of the 90's. WAKE UP IT'S THE NEW MILLENNIUM!!! And have fun golfing with your underaged Hootersgirl LAREEE!!! Maddux--you lost to the TERROR SQUAD!!!

SF Giants--General Dusty Baker: Next time, pinch hit when it's Bases loaded 2 out and you're down by 2 in a do-or-die game. Guess you can rest that bullpen until April now. Bonds--What a postseason CHOKE!!!

NYY--team of the Century--LAST CENTURY!!!

Seattle M's--Home of pussy whipped Olerud and card-playing Rickey is Rickey. Can't wait to see AROD in our uniform next year!

St. Lose-to-us--America's best baseball town--where the fans leave the park after McGwire's last steroid-enhanced at bat.
