Cheney Utters 'F-Word' in U.S. Senate?

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Vice President Dick Cheney (news - web sites) blurted out the "F word" at Democratic Sen. Patrick Leahy of Vermont during a heated exchange on the Senate floor, congressional aides said on Thursday.

The incident occurred on Tuesday in a terse discussion between the two that touched on politics, religion and money, with Cheney finally telling Leahy to "f--- off" or "go f--- yourself," the aides said.

"I think he was just having a bad day," Leahy was quoted as saying on CNN, which first reported the incident. "I was kind of shocked to hear that kind of language on the floor."

"That doesn't sound like language the vice president would use but there was a frank exchange of views," said Cheney spokesman Kevin Kellems.

According to congressional aides, Leahy said hello to Cheney following the taking of the Senate group photo on the floor of the chamber.

Cheney, who is president of the Senate, then ripped into Leahy for the Democratic senator's criticism this week of alleged war profiteering in Iraq (news - web sites) by Halliburton, the oil services company that Cheney once ran.

Leahy and other Democrats have called for congressional hearings into whether the vice president helped the firm win lucrative contracts in Iraq after the U.S.-led war that toppled Saddam Hussein (news - web sites).

During their exchange, Leahy noted that Republicans had accused Democrats of being anti-Catholic because they are opposed to some of President Bush (news - web sites)'s anti-abortion judges, the aides said.

That's when Cheney unloaded with the "F-bomb," aides said.

With the Senate sharply divided, Democrats and Republicans have had numerous partisan battles in recent years on matters from taxes to health care.

"Things have been pretty bad around here," said Sen. Max Baucus, a Montana Democrat. "But as far as I know, as far as I'm concerned, this is a new low."

According to Senate rules, profanity is not permitted while the chamber is in session. But when the exchange occurred between Leahy and Cheney, the Senate was not in session so there was technically no foul.

Earlier on Thursday, before word of the exchange spread, Senate Minority Leader Tom Daschle, a South Dakota Democrat, stood in the chamber and spoke of the need to improve civility with what he called the "politics of common ground."

I agree with Senator Baucus, that is indeed a new low. :(

I expect that kind of thing from my laborers and carpenters but I had hoped that the Vice President had a little more class. One more reason to be disapointed with the current administration.

You know for most of my life the F-word has been 'fart'.

I blame my mom. But I can say F**k in front of her and she doesn't care. Say fart and she'll box your ears.

Cheney really seems out to claim the title of the most unlikeable man in the history of U.S Government.

Does anyone have anything good to say about this man?

Let's ask his mama, Zoot.:)

It looks like that plaster saint facade is beginning to crack under pressure from his own party.

That certainly sounds good to me.

Should we not start a petition to have Vice President Cheney go on television to apologies for saying the "f"-word.

If only for the sake of the children.

I think he should be fined like Janet Jackson and Justin Timberlake as his vulgarity has made it out to the airwaves.

Wow. American politics this haggard? I mean, to blow up over a politician saying "fuck?" Geez, you Americans are touchy.

I have to agree. I, personally, am not at all touchy and "fuck" is one of the most commonly used words in the English Lauguage. On some movies or TV shows, it is the most commonly used word, or so it seems.

I use it as often as possible.

He did this in private? He said the F word in private -- not in front of reporters or during an interview...but, like, everyday life?

Does the man pee standing up? I mean, give me a break! Clinton stuck a cigar up somegirl's P***Y in the oval office and cigar sales rocketed and they are complaining that Cheney said the F word?

Well, well, well, whatever next?

The day the Queen calls Prince Phillip a twat will have me ROFLMAO. :D

 You call the Queen...oh, never mind!

"Plonker" would seem more appropriate.

Oh no, that's Edward. :D

No. he said in in a public photo session to a man who had extended his hand for him to shake. Senator Leahy had called for an investigation into the billions of dollars Cheny's former company is raking in from government contracts in Iraq.

You Brits don't understand. This is the party that's clamping down on any sort of obscenity on the airwaves, that made the big deal out of Janet Jackson showing her tit on TV. Whose Attorney General has actually placed draperies over the bare-chested fingure of Justice holding the scales that stands in the Department of Justice foyer. Honest. He hung a curtain around her.

Politics is politics, but there's always been a tradition of public decorum in the senate. Your opponent might be a dog-assed motherfucker in private, but in public he's The Worthy Gentleman.

I can't believe this is even a story. A bunch of people together for a picture and one tells another to fuck off.

It's not like Senate was in session and he said it on the senate floor and it went into the record.
