Ok, I know....Mama said I shouldn't talk religion or politics in polite company (with ladies, I think that meant.). But this one question involves ladies, so I think I'll break my mama's advice...

Ladies, what is your stance on feminism and the Equal Rights Amendment? Now mind you, this is a serious question. Is it dead (I know it is legally, but I read of an attempt to revive it)? Should it be? What's your opinion?

The reason I ask is that I am writing a paper on the subject, and I would like to find out what our little corner of the web thinks. If there is enough interest, I might post a poll to see about it.

I guess it doesn't matter then....

No posts to me says it ain't interesting enough....thanks anyway ladies...sorry to bother!

I guess I won't then.

Geesh! You post a thread and give us half an hour to rally the troops?

Well, it is a nice spring day and it is the middle of the afternoon. Many folks are busy with real life, well, not me.

Give your thread a chance before you get into a huff over it.

I am not a lady, at least not the last time I looked, but I will voice an opinion on the subject, and maybe that will get the very intelligent ladies here talking.

I do not think the ERA is necessary:

1) There are a hell of a lot of laws on the books, federal and state, that protect most women's rights to be treated equally in all public arenas, including the workplace. When the ERA was being pushed most of these laws were not on the books.

2) We have made significant progess in this area of civil rights, pushing the ERA now would probably distract from the momentum that has built up in this area.

3) We do not need Constitutional amendments for each and every civil right, or for each group that wants to protect their rights. This country was founded on the basic principle that we all have Natural Rights, among them that every human should be allowed equal protection under the law. If we start amending the Constitution for each and every group, then we diminish that ideal, and it can then be argued that those people who do not have an amendment explicitly protecting their rights, do not have those rights, when indeed they do.

I think that perhaps many corporations should be reprimanded if they refuse to pay their female employees as much as their equally-qualified male employees. I think equal opportunity has gotten out of hand, as well, in some instances. There are many men who are more qualified than woman in their field, but are not hired because the company needs a female employee to fill their annual gender ratio, even if the male could bring more to the company than the female.

I know I am not of the female persuasion, but here's my opinion.

I think the ERA is dead. Affirmative Action, the entire feminist movement, and NOW have replaced the need for the ERA.

Gloria Steinem's a bitch.

The ERA's time has probably passed. It was good in spirit, muddled in practice and never really stood a chance at making a big difference.

I don't know Ms. Steinem.

I hate quoting myself, but felt it was necessary. Armyjim has apologized for his lack of patience and I am apologizing for being so bitch about it.

Call it a bad day....

If the Equal Rights Ammendment could get me a new transmission for my vehicle, I would be damned happy :(

ERA is dead and should never have been proposed.
It was completely out of line as a constitutional amendment.
If that makes me a traitor to my gender sobeit.
