We had snow overnight, and it is still snowing. I'm on the northern end of the storm, so I only have about 3 inches in my backyard so far. But I have woods, and there is a group of white tail deer that I've been watching all during my breakfast. We haven't had much snow this winter at all, and the deer seem to just be loving it! Chasing each other back and forth, stopping to munch on twigs inbetween. My cat is jealous- he is sitting at the patio door meowing at them.

Oh well, time for work for me. I don't think I'll have quite as much fun in the snow as the deer, but it is still pretty out there. I'm going to try to enjoy the view on my way in.

Have a great day everyone!

Good Morning!

that would be an awesome view.
i would enjoy something like that during coffee.
it is not really snow here. it is more like snow/ice pellets.

So the GB is really Home on the Range?

well, there is the little part about "where seldom is heard a discouraging word"

We got ten inches here Ms. Smartie Pants. It is beautiful, all frosted white and sparkling. It is amazing that a limb on a tree that is two inches wide supports six inches of snow pyamided up precariously. I love the way the evergreens are shouded in the white stuff. It is the quiet that always affects me the most. The hush as we pay homage to the might of mother nature before the tow trucks and snow movers appear.

I used to love watching the deer from our house in CT. Whole families would congregate on the snow-covered lawn.

I didn't like them as much after both of my dogs and one of my kids contracted Lyme disease though. :(

I've been sitting here looking out my dormer window, watching the horses play in the snow. They've been running laps of the pasture for an hour, then stopping with their tails up and steam coming off their bodies.

I feel bad for the pregnant one. She's HUGE and just can't keep up with the others. She's trying though. Can't wait til next winter when I get to watch the colt discover his first snow.

i recall hearing about them playing reindeer games.
then one foggy christmas eve.....

PCG, how long do horses gestate for?

Do you bring a vet in to attend the birth, or do it yourself? Do you start sleeping in the barn when her time is near?

Just curious.

They're pregnant for 11 months, give or take. Some go over a year, some about 10 1/2 months. They're fickle, tend to drop their babies whenever and wherever they want.

I'll camp out in the paddock, and have a vet on standby just in case, but things rarely go wrong with horses. I'll probably miss the actual birth, she's not a trusting mare, so she'll wait until I stumble into the hose for coffee and drop it, I just know it.

How exciting. I would love to watch a mare give birth.

When is she due? Do horses ever have multiple births?

She's due around July 4th. Later than I would have liked, but that's just how it worked out. The stud I bred her to has since been gelded, so this is his last baby. He's gorgeous, I'll post pics when I find them.

They occasionally have twins, though that usually doesn't turn out so well.

Yes, they do play. And I don't live on the range, either! :p

The roads weren't that bad at all today. But tonight we are getting rain/sleet that will turn to more snow. A layer of ice may be pretty in the woods, but not so pretty on the roads for tomorrow. Oh well. This winter has really been nothing so far so I'm not complaining!

Home On The Range

Oh, give me a home, where the buffalo roam
Where the deer and the antelope play
Where seldom is heard a discouraging word
And the skies are not cloudy all day.

Chorus
Home, home on the range
Where the deer and the antelope play
Where seldom is heard a discouraging word
And the skies are not cloudy all day.

How often at night, when the heavens are bright
With the light from the glittering stars
I've stood there amazed, and asked, as I gazed,
If their glory exceeds that of ours.

Chorus

The air is so pure, and the zephyrs so free
And the breezes so balmy and light
I would not exchange my home on the range
For all the cities so bright.

Chorus
