Hubby and I have discussed this and since I am unable to stick to a diet and excercise regime, he will be expecting certain things of me.

I will be expected to excercise daily, follow my diet and to get down to my goal weight. He has not told me if I will have daily or weekly weigh ins.

Today is the first day so far I am upbeat about this losing weight. Me being overweight has contributed to my feelings of worthlessness.

Hopefully it will all be positive for me and no need for correction as I don't want to disappoint hubby. Also he has not told me what the punishment will be and I don't think I really wanna find out.

Having help could be the perfect motivator.

I wish you the best and hope your self esteem sky-rockets as you shed the pounds. = )

daily weigh ins are unfair.
There is so much that can happen between one day and the next - hell between one hour and the next. It's very complex - water retention, what you ate, how much food is in your system, whether you took antiinflammatory pain killers, hormones...that weighing you daily is setting you up for failures that aren't your fault.
I'd say weekly. There is not a single respected place I'm familiiar with that goes with daily weigh ins.

Good luck! And congratualtions!

Thank you I think it will help with my self esteem. I am also doing a book that was recommended on self esteem. There seems to be so much work to do when you have depression issues. Oh well I guess it will be worth it as I will (hopefully) be a better person for it

Good for you in your efforts to lose weight.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. When you drink MORE water than all other liquids you consume in a day combined that will make a big difference.

I don't really believe in dieting. I believe in eating what you want but just less of it it.

Extreme diets tend to set up cravings that often bite ya back.

Exercise is great but should be built up to slowly. If you start out all gonzo then are too sore to continue one of the days you need to that defeats me, you know?

I also favor foods that make you feel full but which don't actually fill you with calories like watermelon, grits or popcorn. You have to be careful what you put on or in the those last two however.

Good luck! I'm sending you good thoughts and best wishes!

Good luck! Furry is so right, drinking lots of water is so incredibly useful when trying to lose weight; it is also good for you even if you're not.

Just finished my pilates excercise cd (20 min of excercise). I found some of the excerises I had trouble with and also had to take mini breaks.

I am also following my diet, except for I allow myself one piece of chocolate a day. I can not let my gifts I received go to waste

Have not weighed myself yet, we have discussed it and are doing the once a week thingy. I also need to get to the supermarked to get some bottled water. Our water in Calgary is disgusting

You know what, I am going to have some chocolate.

I almost never do.

But I've got the urge, and having lost 7 pounds in the last week being sick, what harm could it do?

The two most important things in Pilates are the breathing and posture. Even if you have to take a break keep the breathing up (in through nose, noisy whoosh out through mouth) and keep your navel planted against your spine and eventually the breaks will decrease.

Good job! Keep up the good work.

Hi-

I've lost 16 pounds since October. Here are some things that I've noticed:

I do better when I drink lots of water.

I am at my lowest weight 1st thing in the morning after I've used the bathroom.

I do both cardio and weight training. At this point I feel the cardio is more worthwhile. As I lose more weight I may shift to a heavier emphasis on weight training. The body for life website is a good place to start for info on exersize. I started on that plan but have periodically adjusted it to meet my needs.

I don't use the body for life diet. I try to chose foods that have a low glycemic value and are also low cal/low fat. I try to get the bulk of my foods from whole grains, lean meats and dairy, and fresh fruits and veggies.

What works for me this month may need to be adjusted next month.

No matter how hard I've worked or how well I've dieted, I experience a slight weight gain (or I maintain) the week or so before my period. But, I then experience a pretty decent loss the week of or just after my period.

Keeping a food journal really helped at first. It's a good tool to go back to when I'm having problems keeping track.

I've had all the tools and motivation in the past to lose weight but I was missing the support. I firmly believe that I am losing weight now because all of the pieces have finally fallen into place. For me, getting support meant posting pretty regularly on boards with other *losers.* I needed to get feedback from people who were impartial and NOT family.

I do weigh in daily because I like the feedback, but I have one official weigh-in per week that I use to chart my overall progress.

Good luck to you. You can do this.

I have lost weight due to illness which I needed to lose. I have KEPT it off primarily, by cutting two things out of my diet that I never thought I could live without.

Refined wheat (any white flour, pasta, etc.)
Refined Sugar (any sugar other than honey, even if it's the third or fourth ingredient down - including the ever present things like "corn syrup" "brown rice syrup" and such)

I also eat nothing preprocessed, I simplified my food and found it still enjoyable. (plain meat and frozen veggies are a staple dinner)

Mainly it was about giving up on the emotional irrational relationship I had with food.

I don't believe in diets, alone. I'm obviously not a professional in this area, but I've seen my sisters diet for years and years, all with no real progress. Like FurryFury said, you are setting yourself up for a rebound, when you totally cut out the foods you crave.

All things in moderation is something to think about. Still eat the foods you enjoy, but just not as much or as often. Fill up with the veggies, etc., and save your favorite foods for a victory celebration.

I know a guy who had to diet becaue of his health. He had never dieted in his 40 years of living, so he really found it difficult. He did really well for the first month or so, but he loved to eat big breakfasts and pizza. He really missed eating these items and before long, he was cashing the diet in for those foods he loved.

I think drinking water is a very good thing. Not only does it help with dieting, but it also washes impurites out of your system, helps with your skin and complection and it hydrates you, too. Nobody drinks enouth water. You really can't go wrong, there.

Exercise is always good. I don't know what kind is best, but elevating your hear rate is always good. Whatever it takes to do that will cause you to sweat and that burns calories. It is also good for a healthy heart.

Personally, I don't like the idea of punishment, if you fail with your diet. Someone doesn't need punishment so much as they need encouragement. Dieting is not easy and if you're the only one doing it, that's even harder. Seeing someone else eat what you can't is not fun, and borders on mental torture.

I see nothing wrong with punishment, as long as it's doen in a way you both enjoy it. No demeaning mental bashing, no real punishments that you don't normally enjoy. That would seem too much like a real punishment for your failure and that only makes you feel worse.

I know I made some humorous comments about punsihments for one of my sub's smoking, but I always encouraged her with positive enforcment, too. Helping someone be positive when they are attempting something so difficult is extremelly necesarry. Instead of pointing out failure, you should encourage success.

You know...I think we should get pictures of the new you, when ever that is. It's just something I threw in there for you to think about. :D Good luck with your weight loss.

I'm skeptical on diets that advocate eating lots of one thing and cutting out lots of other things, unless those other things are blatantly non-natural.

(i.e. it's okay to cut out french fries from mcD's or whatever. It's kind of silly to cut out carbs, entirely.)

Since moving back to AZ, I've been eating less and drinking tons more water, and I've lost about 15 lbs so far. It's not been terribly fast -- I've been here about three months now -- but it's encouraging. I'm now only 5 lbs away from my first weight-loss goal, and then I can start working towards my second. (Doing it all in one goal was too overwhelming.)

After I get my next paycheck in the next day or two, and am feeling better after being sick for a month, I plan to start excersising regularly at a gym, too. I have crap for self-control, so I can't excersise well at home, and am having a friend take me to the gym on a regular basis so I can't cop out on it. :p

Best of luck on your new routine, and I agree -- we need pictures! :D

Hi all :)

Day 2: excersied today. I noticed during the leg ones I could reach my leg a little bit further. I am not expecting anything big right away but was surprised to see that my legs are starting to loosen up.
I did not make it to the store to get my bottled water, will have to do that on the way to work.
I am doing ok on the candy front-- only cheated once yesterday and had one extra piece. I did not beat myself up over it though just made a mental note to try harder. I am to chocolate like Grace is to cookies, as you can see this is not going to be a easy part for me.
Thanks for all of the posititive reinforcement all. I do come here when I get cravings to read all of your posts, and it seems to help. I am not restricting specific foods except for sugars etc. I am diabetic and was not watching my diet at all. I am thinking it is like my smoking, I am just addicted to sugar and once I don't have it for a while hopefully it will get better. Unfortunately I live in a household of sugar addicts as well, although I am the grocery shopper, so they better get used to salads and fresh fruit and veggies. I am also the one who does all the baking so I am not going to be making cookies cakes etc. I figure that way when I get a craving I can grab a piece of fruit or a carrot stick etc.
Pictures will come when I am down to my weight or comfortable with the weight I am. I am also working on my self esteem at the moment. I suppose I could post a pic of my baby finger, that would count right? :p
One quick question I also want to try to quit smoking. Should I try Jan 1 or wait until I am down to my weight? Is that too much to work on at once? I am looking for suggestions as I am so unsure if I will be expecting too much of my body--- excercising dieting working on self esteem issues and quitting smoking.

http://home.deds.nl/~tlampje/poppetjes/poppetjes/3x/poppetjes3382.gif Daily weighing is something I get addicted to while losing weight, mostly because it helps me keep my focus whether the news is good or bad, but in theory daily weighing is not good as it is normal to fluctuate day to day so recommended you should only weigh in weekly at the most. As to losing weight in general, my daughter has done wonders on the Atkins diet and I also did well on a similar program some years back. The difficulty I have here is while I lived in Oz, I had access to much more variety in food, especially fresh and unprocessed...living here has been difficult to maintain that, impossible actually, and if buying anything which is not fresh vegetable, is difficult to find it without salt or sugar added, both which cause serious health complications for me. Before my recent trip back to Oz, I was walking a minimum of 2 hours each day or 2 and managed to lose 10 lb in just over a week without changing my diet (including those nasty chocolates I am addicted to). The weight has not come back and I am planning to get back into the long walks, accompanied by my own exercise regime I always use. I am fortunate in that even now at this age, my body changes shape in 3-4 days with exercise...lol, my friends back home used to hate that!!

Personally, I don't think these two things together are a good thing. Dieting isn't easy and neither is quiting smoking. If it were me, I'd do one and then use the good vibes from the success I had with that to tackle the other.

Now, I'm no expert at either of these, so this is just my opinion. If anybody else has a different opinion, please voice it. Maybe it is easier to quit two things at once. Sometimes you just never know.

Thing is with smoking and dieting: most folks who diet and smoke will increase the amount they smoke. Folks who quit smoking will usually increase their munching on foods. Both are basically related to oral gratification and/or the need to do something with their fingers. I am not sure how much you smoke per day and if using nicotine patch and/or gum is an option, but personally I would do both (ie quit smoking and diet) at the same time so you aren't fighting with potentially more weight gain (usually when a person quits smoking it is good for 10 pounds). Your health will be better in the long run and your exercise regimen will show more results. Really look at what your "triggers" are and patterns for smoking (ie some folks always smoke when they wake up/after meals/driving..etc) and try to change them up.

Just speaking from my experiences in dealing with patients who were quitting smoking while hospitalized for chemical dependency and/or psych issues.

Good luck! :rose:

Feeling kind of down atm. I seem to have overdone the excersing as one of my legs is hurting quite a bit. I have taken 2 days off of excercsing then I am going to try it again.
I have also been eating a lot of junk (probably due to my being down). I have today and tomorrow off so I will get back into it starting tomorrow.
I am getting the patch this payday( so Friday) and going to be quitting smoking too. I find I am getting irritated that a cigerette controls so much of my life.
Thanks for all of the replies.

Lil Elmo,

This is very important in dieting and any major changes you try to make in your life. Always find a way to forgive yourself, nuture yourself and start with a fresh slate.

*hugs*

Fury :rose:

Don't let slipping get you down. Everyone slips when they're dieting the trick is to not let it become a total spiral. I sounds like that isn't going to happen as you're already planning to hop right back on your diet and excercise so just let it go.

As for the hurting your leg during your excercise you may have simply tried to do too much all at once. You said you have a pilates tape and those are good cardio and muscle toning usually, you might also consider getting something for flexibility (like a beginners yoga tape) and don't forget to stretch! :rose:

Good luck on reaching your goals, let us know how it goes and when you need a boost! :)

Progress is two steps forward and one step back, hon.

Does anyone know of a weight ticker better than this one? Whenever I update it I have to choose it all over again. That's why the number jumps.

It's very possible you have pulled a muscle. While that's no big dieal, they can hurt when you try to do what caused the pull, again. If exercising cause the pull, it is going to hurt a lot to exercise for a while.

Take a rest from it, and take care of your sort muscle. Depending on how bad it is, you can use the same methods as any sports injury...ice pack in the first 24 hours, then moist heat after that, for no more than 15 minutes or so, every hour. You can also alternate the ice and moist heat every other hour, if that makes it feel better.

But, like caela has said, you probably just tried to do too much too soon. Slow down with the exercise or make it less of a stress on your body and just take longer for the same result.

Over doing the exercise isn't going to get you to your goal any faster, because your body can only go at one speed, for a while. If you continue to push it, you will continue to pull muscles. The phrase "no pain, no gain" doesn't mean to over do it to that extreme.

You are suppose to be toning your muscles, toning your body, slowly burning fat and replacing that with toned muscles and a healthy heart muscle. If what you are doing is too much too soon, you might need to find something that is more of a beginner stage, and then go back to what you are doing later.

and be sure to stretch your muscles before you do much strenuous exercise. Cold muscles are more prone to injury. Like runners stretch before they run, you should do similar stretches before you exercise. And, drink water to hydrate your muscles.

Sounds like you are sticking to it, just fine. Sure, the muscle pull is a little depressing and it slows you down, but that happens to even the most talented and toned athletes.

A little sliding is nothing to worry about. Use this as a templet for later...now you know what your weaknesses are, if you pull another muscle.

Full speed ahead is a path to burn out, for sure. Stick with your basic program, but tone it down a bit with the strenuoius stuff.

Well, I'm just saying the same things that others have already said, so I'll just say keep at it...you are doing just fine. In fact you are doing better than fine. You need to slow down a bit, until your body can handle your desire to push it.
