The Cursed One

Kain slowly began to shake his head as he gathered the knives and forks and then suddenly she was crying. Closing his eyes breifly he sighed, "Cass," he said softly and then was by her side, sitting next to her, cradling her in his large strong arms. "Shhh, Cass," he said softly, "Its going to be okay," he whispered to her, wiping some hair from her forehead, "Believe me, I know how you feel,"

He smiled and stretched out a hand, holding his palm open, turning it upwards, he concentrated slightly, frowning and soon a ball of air formed above his upturned palm. She would feel the rush of air passing her as he took the particles in the air around them and formed them into a swirling mass. He picked dug into the pockets of his leather jacket and extracted a small bag full of salt, pinching some of it out of the little packet, he threw it at his outstretched hand.

The salt flung from his fingers and began to swirl around in a tight circle above his hand. He smiled, showing Cassie some of his power, the salt allowing to fully see the flows of air he weaved. Then the salt abruptly fell and he shook his head.

"I can help you Cassie, just let me, please," he said softly looking into her eyes and smiling what he hoped was a reasurring smile, however that small scar made it look odd and lopsided.

Cassie looked at Kain and felt the power flowing through him as she watched the ball of salt floating in the air above his hand. She wanted to ask him why he would keep this from her but she already knew the answer. He would think that if she knew about this power within him that she would not trust him and had to hide it but there was also something else about him, something that he seemed to be hiding but she knew just how much he was opening up to her although part of her wanted to ask why.

She knew that she had to trust him though as he seemed to be the only one in this world that was willing to help her, that seemed to want to help her. He had brought her here where she would be safe at least for a while and she had to open up to him, she had to open up to someone and hope that he would be able to help her, the one thing that she needed so very much.

It was then that the tears began to flow again and she looked at Kain, "I am so sorry. I lost control again. Please help me- I beg of you, help me."

Kain's eyes widened in alarm as she abruptly started to cry again. He sighed, why did all women insist on crying? Really... was there any point to it? Awkwardly, he placed his arms around her and patted her back a few times. The mysteries of women would never be solved when it came to his mind. They were just plain unpredictable... throw in that she had destructive powers and probably hormonal to boot and... he sighed again.

"Its alright Cassie," for some reason that seemed to calm most women down, even when they thought it wouldn't be alright, strange, "I'll help you as much as I can, I promise," he said in his soft voice. His pale eyes were soft now, caring almost. The hard glint in them gone for the moment, though there was still a haunted quality to his smokey gaze, "I never break my promises, Cass, never,"

"When did the powers start to manifest?" he asked, may as well get straight into it. If they didn't he wasn't sure he'd survive through to tomorrow. He grimaced, it was going to be a long night.

She looked straight at him and wondered if she could tell him or if she should stay quiet. She knew that she needed help but she wondered if he could tell him everything, if she could let him help her. She wiped her eyes and looked into his, seeing something in there that wasn't there before. He had a sense of compassion in them and all that he wanted was to help her. She took a deep breath and suddenly wrapped around her arms around him, pulling herself close.

She took a deep breath to steady herself and moved back to look into his eyes again.

"I don't know when they manifested within me but I know that I was very young and I started putting everyone in danger. I hated it when they came about because I was an outcast, much as I am now. There is one other thing that I know as well; that I feel as though there is something after me."

It was the first that she had ever told anyone that and she wondered why she was telling Kain, a person that she still hardly knew about it. She then wondered if she was telling him this because she wanted someone to help her... to protect her.

Kain stifled a yelp as she hugged him suddenly and then pulled back, pouring out her words. He listened thoughtfully, not letting her go, his arms around her as well as he thought. "Something after you? How do you mean?" he asked her softly, staring into her eyes and tilting his head slightly.

There were many secrets to Kain, some not even he himself knew but there was one thing that he did know at that point in time, he would have done anything to help this young woman. Not for any particularily good reason, he could have killed her easily, but purely for the selfish reason that he wanted to prove that he could. Help her, that is.

"When I was young, martial arts helped me to control what was raging inside me. It gave me the discipline to master myself," he wasn't really sure why he was saying this, but talking seemed to help the sudden aching of his heart as he thought about his younger years. "I had nobody to turn to, nobody who believed that I should at least have a go at living," he sighed and looked into her eyes again, "At least you're luckier in that than I am," he smiled, the scar giving it a more lopsided look.

"Do you feel like you have to protect yourself from everybody around you?"

She was surprised by what she had just been told and wondered what she could say to help him as he had opened up to her and yet she felt as though he was still hiding things. It was then that she heard the question and knew the only answer to that.

"Yes. I have to run away from others, I have to be by myself to keep others safe from me. There is no way that I can control what I do and if I am around others I know that I will hurt them just as I did in the diner. I almost killed everyone there it I hadn't of left. I am so scared of what I can do and myself. All that I want is to stop hurting everyone."

She knew that she was close to tears but she did not want to do that, not now. She just wanted to sit back and relax, to forget that this day had happened, to forget that she had done everything that she had done but she knew just how hard that was. She had done far too much to ever forget and she bowed her head to look down at the floor.

"Help me. Please help me."

"Help me. Please help me."

He shook his head and closed his eyes, wincing slightly as a loud and rather rude grumble made its way from his stomach to his ears. He sighed... "I'll help you Cassie. You just have to let me," then he sighed again. "Are you any good at cooking?" he asked absently as he rose and made his way to the kitchen. "I'm completely hopeless..." he said softly as he stuck his head into a freezer packed with microwaveable dinners. He blinked owlishly at them and closed the fridge door.

Turning his back onto it he ghosted his way towards the large french doors facing the lake. The fiery late afternoon sun lighting up the glassy mirrored surface with an orange glow. Silently he stared out onto the beautiful vista. After a long minute or two, he silently nodded to himself. "I think we'll have fish tonight," he said softly and unlatched the doors to let himself out onto the back porch.

The heady scents of the forest assualted his sensitive olfactory senses and he smiled oddly to himself. He could hear the wind caressing the shoreline, could feel the ripples made in the air by the birds soaring overhead. The world was an amazing place, he grimaced, it was the people in it that he despised.

Taking a deep breath, the fire in his eyes dimmed somewhat, he turned back towards Cassie, a slight sardonic grin twisted on his lips as he called over to her. "Have you ever fished, Cass?"

He took off his coat and folded it neatly onto a nearby rock the size of a small elephant. His sleeveless black shirt ripples along his torso as a sudden breeze caught the light fabric. His powerful arms corded with muscle, not a slice of fat to be seen. The strange tattoos on his wrist and arm shown. The blades strapped to his forearm in leather sheaths also uncovered, the silvery hilts of the daggers thrusting out, in reach of his fingers should he need them. One would wonder what other weapons he had concealed on his person.

He grinned and reached out a hand, spreading his fingers wide, palm facing forwards. Closing his eyes briefly and centering on himself, on his core of raw power, he grabbed what he needed and manipulated the flows of air he weaved. A pulsed seemed to come from his palm, noiseless, unseen, indicated only via the his grunt of exertion and his slight step backwards. Curling his hand into a tight fist he smiled trimphantly and jerked his hand back.

Out of the water a fish, fairly largish, jumped from the lake's depths, disturbing the still surface with a splash and ensuing chaotic ripples. It wriggled in the air for a bare moment before landed with a wet thump onto the ground. Kain walked forward and stepped lightly on the tail, waiting for it to stop wriggling with life, only afterwards scooping it up by the gills.

"Freshwater fish, best thing to have on an empty stomach," he said, triumphantly holding up the scaly creature for Cassie to see. Gathering his coat he walked back into the cabin, the large doors closing of their own volition after him and took the fish, dumping it into the kitchen sink.

"I'll make you a deal. I'll clean it, you cook it? Okay?" He smiled at her, warmly, though his eyes were that unchanging misty grey, they seemed soft now, but an inner heat coursed behind them.

I'll help you Cass, I promise. I can't afford to let somebody like you run wild... nobody can, he thought to himself. And he'd start by making her feel safe. As far as he was concerned, he'd figured that her powers were usually controlled by her emotions. So... happy thoughts... happy manifestations, right?

He certainly hoped so...

She stood there and looked at Kain, wanting nothing more than to laugh. Just because she was a female it did not mean that she knew how to cook things. She would cook the fish but she wondered how she was going to cook it and looked around. He truly did not know what the hell to do with her but as she looked at him he could see that he was trying whatever he could to keep her calm and give her something to do. It made her wonder what he was scared of, if it was her or something to do about her and that made her slight scared. She slowly walked towards the kitchen and looked through the cupboards, trying to find things to cook the fish with but was having trouble with it. She laughed softly as she grabbed a bowl and put it down on the bench in front of her. She turned around and looked at Kain, watching him as he cut the fish and wondered what she could put into the bowl to make the fish taste better.

She looked into the cupboards again and started laughing as she didn't even know what was in the cupboards or where the first place to look was. She turned to Kain again.

"What do you like with your fish because I am not a mind reader."

She laughed loudly again and saw a smile come to his face.

So he is human after all... she thought before she sat down on the bench and watched him, waiting for his answer.
