The Cool Science Stuff Thread

Glad they clarified Tibet wasn't in the Arctic but until recently, it wasn't part of China either.
I'm not a biologist and appreciate pathogens mutate as part of their party lifestyle ;) but the thawing permafrost and glaciers might well present us with corvid20 to kill us all. Not before time of course.

Already, viable Spanish Flu and anthrax have been found....

I wonder if these recent findings will impact the small but lucrative glacial ice importation market?
“Yes Jeeves, on the rocks with a twist of glacial pox”..

This might be a drink at the next AGU fall meeting.

Won't be happinin'. The greenies will stop it.

In Juneau, we used to go up and get chunks of ice floating in the lake from the Mendenhall Glacier, chop it up, and use it in our coolers. Good ice! Would last for over a week. Store bought stuff lasts a few days. You did have to be careful how you packed stuff in your cooler, cause it would freeze your beer & pop.

Then, no more. The USFS decided it was on the endangered species list or something. I think it was a $500 fine if you got caught kidnapping ice floating in the lake. Didn't stop the USFS from always having a chunk of it on the wall in front of the visitors center in the summer, with a fancy-dancy sign, telling you all about it. Including the fine for packing any of it home.

Things on the 'boy is that stupid' list.

It is part of something called a National Forest. I know rules makes no sense to small brain idjits like you, but they exist for a reason. The fine also applies if you get caught taking rocks, or wood too.

Explain the reason.
Hint: There ain't one.

Sad, that you don't understand the difference between a rock, and hard water. AKA; Ice...... that will float around the bend, into the Mendenhall River, and into Gastineau Channel. (AKA; the ocean.

Please give a real explanation. The Forest Svc couldn't. I don't expect you can either, other to say mine is not to reason why, mine is but to do or die.

You didn't read the article did you? What exists IN THE PARK, STAYS IN THE PARK. if the ice floats outside the park...it is free game. Sorry you are too old to learn.

Again....you just skipped right over my question.

Stealing rocks, from say, The Petrified Forest, yup....a bad thing. Other folks come along, and can't see them anymore. They are gone. I've seen people hauled away in handcuffs for doing that. Makes sense.

A few locals, taking glacial ice, floating in the lake, when they can nab some, which I will add, is once and a while at best, HOW IS THAT BAD?

I don't need to read the article. Apples & oranges pard.
Don't understand the question?

Rocks are 'forever', relatively.

Ice melts.
It melts in the lake.
It melts when in goes into the river (a short trip)
And it melts when it hits the salt water in the ocean.
It also melts when the rangers put it up on the stone wall for display, but when it does, it melts onto the sidewalk, onto the parking lot, picking up oil & whatever, and then through a drain pipe, and into the lake.

Again: Explain what it hurts, to anyone, or anything, to grab a chunk of ice, and stick it in your cooler.

Two boats are on the lake. One contains stupid selfish people, like yourself. Another contains people that paid to see the environment in as pristine nature as possible so they could take photographs. The selfish people motor over and collect ice for their coolers, leaving nothing. Do they have more rights than those that wished to take pictures of the ice floating against a backdrop of beauty? The law exists so EVERYONE has an EQUAL opportunity to enjoy our National Forest lands. It isn't about ice. It isn't about a rock, which there are trillions of. It is called a "stewardship". Old people like you...are a disease. Sick minds.

I am talking about ice.
And first off, how many tourists go out in a boat in Mendenhall Lake? (Hint.....none, other than to raft down the river)
How many locals go out in a boat in Mendenhall Lake? (Hint....answer is 0)

You are talking about bullshit whataboutisms, in a place you know nothing about.
You are not answering the question, other than to make shit up.

Please take a trip to Alaska.
Go to Juneau. You can get there by plane, or boat, or the Alaska Ferry System.
Visit the Mendenhall Glacier. It's easy. You can rent a car and drive there.

Quit talking out your ass.

You should read the last 2 quotes of yourself dumbass. Cant have it both ways. We are done. The law exists. End of story.

You have failed to explain to me, what the difference is, between the ice melting in the lake, in the river, on the wall, or in my cooler.....makes.

Go ahead.....dodge the question. No doubt, you are like the forest service guys I talked to up there, that had no answer either.

Good.
Don't go away mad. Just get the flying fuck outa here.

You could take it up with the Trump-appointed head of the USDA. He’s had three years to dispose of regulations, but that one still stands.

Why? That has nothing to do with what I am talking about.
NOTHING! NADA!

Why don't you explain the changes that would happen, by removing some chucks of ice?
Why don't you explain any 'damage' that would be done?

But hey....if you are bored, maybe you can find the regulation about locals fetching glacial ice out of a lake, to keep their beer cold when the go fishing. Maybe you can find if there's a regulation, that says it's OK to fetch glacier ice out of a lake, if you are a Native American.

Or....I suspect, you, as usual, don't know what you are talking about.....and are just trolling for jollies.

Huh?

Mendenhall Lake is part of the Mendenhall Glacial Recreation Area, which is part of the Tongass National Forest, which is governed by the US Forest Service, which is a division of the USDA, which is headed by the US Secretary of Agriculture, Sonny Perdue. He’s the one you should whine to.

Still stupid I see.

Why does it make any difference, why locals grab a chunk of ice out of the lake, and use it in their coolers?

You have failed to answer the question. No surprise.

And if you think I don't know where the lake is, I used to live just a little over a mile away from it.

So...again.....answer the damn question.

You got me. I have no idea why the Trump administration would impose such an idiotic regulation. I suppose that they could all be idiots.

I lived there in the 90’s.
Trump, or his admin, had nothing to do with it, since, in the 90’s, there was no Trump admin. (Duh)
You are the idiot, as you are only looking to blame Trump, and not answering my simple question.

I will chalk you up, as having no clue, as usual, to why removing a few pieces of glacier ice from a lake, would be detrimental to the environment, unless of course, you are the people saying you can’t do it, in which case, you do to show tourists pieces of glacial ice.

How do you know that’s still the case then? You’re bitching about something that happened a few decades ago. Do you want reparations?
