The foam pad they were sitting on wasn't firmly mounted -- actually seems to part of a free swinging pendulum. Each metronome is thus part of a larger pendulum-system.

Me saw this on a NOVA® episode. My recollection is that the process is closest to reduction to practice for "growing" blood vessels and skin tissue.
