The Construction Thread

I couldn't help but wonder if that was a Kaman K-Max until I read the article.

The K-Max has an external payload capacity of 6,000 pounds- insufficient for the 18,000 pound external lift capacity required for that job.

I see from the article that Erickson was busted by Skycrane. It's a well-written article.

Hi folks. I might be in the wrong thread, but where else could I find experts here in Lit?

What is this woman holding onto: a beam, girder, or post?

Description says beam, but isn't it a post?

What are beams, posts, and girders anyway? Which ones are horizontal, vertical, or even diagonal?

I assume posts are vertical and girders horizontal. (girder vis-à-vis girdle?)

I'm also working on a few stories I'm likely to upload on this site where buildings figure a bit into and your comments would be helpful. :)

It is a place where women rule.
and
CMNF club
in Story Ideas

In the first story, the women form a country, or country of sorts, where almost all the adults are women, and naturally they rule.

The place is about 4000 sq km in area and a bit over 1 million people; and they have a few notable projects. Among them:

1. an artificial lake not created by damming a river
2. a pipeline that either transports seawater that's been desalinated near shore, or seawater a few 100 km into the interior—likely desert—to be desalinated.
3. a group of statues each 1x to 2x the size of the Statue of Liberty.

Assuming 1 million people x +$20 000 PCI/annum = $20 billion GDP, are such projects at least somewhat feasible?

In the second story, the Club has hundreds of hectares for hundreds of women to wander around naked in. However, when it gets cold, perhaps snowing, there is a greenhouse that's at least 6 hectares in size—I'm thinking more of over 12 hectares. Outside is cold, misty, and raining (thanks Rod)—or again even snowing. Inside it's sub-tropical, even tropical, with lots of greenery, including orange and coconut trees, maybe parrots flying among them, sandy places where they can play volleyball, and parts where you'd think you're in a jungle.

Is such feasible, how much would it cost, and what would the maintenance entail?

Comments are appreciated.
