I went back in too, last year. I'm doing a teaching fellowship and working on a PhD. We got spooked by the recession and wanted to be sure, if all else fell through, that at least one of us could teach out our days if we had to.

Chicago Bridge and Iron used to put the grad engineers in the field and let them learn from the tradesmen. Their first job was to pick up rod stubs on the project. The apprentices got a break.

First day of journeyman welding yesterday.

Not too shabby. My starts need work.

Saw an apprentice practicing for the column climb race: 40 foot column in 8.5 sec on the stopwatch with feet flat on the outside of the outside flange, like spiderman, instead of jammed in the web.

That shit'll make you feel old.

They have the time rankings for the whole class on a whiteboard.How humiliating.
