The Construction Thread

Haven't the Russians stopped sending us the stuff out of their dismantled weapons? Or was that just a rumor?

They do not recover uranium in this country, but the French have plans to build a recover plant here.

There is a lot of reserves owned by mining companies that will not mine it until the price come up

May I shill for UEC?

How hard could it be? Rip that shit out of the ceiling and move on.

And come home glowing green!

My TIG instructor had stories about welding Inconel in the Air Force, in crazy positions. I couldn't even do a flat stainless lap joint without burning the whole thing up.

Less heat! Fuck.

And travel speed. When you get the puddle going and both sides tied in, go like a bat out of hell.

I had an instructor tell me about patching aluminum aircraft on the runway with an acetylene torch while in the Air Force. Try that.

Down at the union hall today paying 2010 dues and met and shook hands with all the officials. The BA said that there had recently been 200 men out of work but now it was down to about 50.

I was in the Diamond District getting some jewelry repaired and there's a big building going up that's supposed to look like a big-ass diamond. They are barely out of the hole and I hope it's steel all the way up.

ABC Construction Economic Update says construction materials were up 0.6% in November. Inflation is a job killer!

And Pete, please stop gaying up the thread with your Air Force talk.

Made in China.....

From the WSJ:

The Nanjing municipal government said 500,000 yuan ($73,250) would be used to repair cracks in the city’s Hanzhongmen Bridge, after an outcry over attempts by a local construction team to fix the cracks with glue, according to state media reports.

The 120-meter bridge is key in connecting Hexi district and downtown Nanjing. Construction on it started three years ago and the bridge was completed on Nov.18, 2008, a lucky date in Chinese culture. The bridge also earned a Nanjing design award for “excellent construction projects” in June this year.

One year after completion, officials found cracks in 50 bridge railings large enough to insert a finger caused by factors involving building materials reacting differently to heat and ground sinkage, according to an announcement on the government Web site.

Public indignation arose when Nanjingers discovered one morning that the bridge had been mended with glue overnight. One Internet user angrily wrote on Sina,”It is obviously a shoddily built project.” Another netizen’s ironic comment: “Glue can not only revamp a damaged bridge but also fix our broken hearts.”

According to Xinhua, the Nanjing government ordered the construction team to go back to the bridge and repair it before the end of next month and pay the 500,000 yuan bill themselves. It said it will investigate the matter further.

Pictures of the glue-mended bridge can be found here.
