The Construction Thread

It's mainly just important that they look more or less the same from the outside.

The original towers took years to reach full occupancy if I remember right.

They were stark, but beautiful.

I still see them in movies that show the New York skyline.

If the government can afford to toss trillions of dollars at banks with no accounting, it ought to be able to replace these buildings. Talk about economic stimulus? That's money doing real work, not just padding some millionaire's offshore account.

But, the frat boys are in charge of the store now, and their priority is obviously getting high.

It seems that rebuilds always have code upgrades. Building codes evolve, and any new construction has to follow the current codes.

OK, I was concerned that they may be upgrading to an upper level of 747proofness

In Manhattan?

Are you kidding?

Any number of stories is economically practical.

No, they are not.
Look at Goldman Sachs
They stopped at 54 because after that the cost outweighs the benefits.
The only reason they go higher nowadays is just to Be The Highest
You gotta be an Oil Sheik to afford that title

Yes, they do. With old apartment buildings it can be a pain sometimes. The job I have now is chocked full of upgrading in every respect.

The upgrades themselves are not so difficult, but the things you encounter in the process are really fucked up sometimes. Shabby workmanship, piss poor material, encountering problems not directly relating to upgrades.....but must be taken care of none-the-less because you are there and capable.

Can someone here answer a question about sheet rock replacement on ceilings?

As in replacing standard material with expensive high density rock on a large scale of square footage? And no, not greenback. Though I prefer greenback in some cases.

If it's no longer economically practical, then America isn't as strong anymore as it was in the 1970's.

America can't afford to build great buildings anymore.

That's alright, let the Chinese build them.

They were stark, but beautiful.

Right on. I was trying to explain this in the WTC thread, but some yuppie architecture snobs weren't getting it.

This is true, but it's fucking sad.

The guys who know this shit don't seem to post here anymore. They were part of the diaspora.

I did the structural detailing on a retro of an 80 year old building downtown. The GC was new to the business but he was a good guy. Anyway 9 months into the job steel prices shot up and he had been sitting on the purchase orders and got burned when he released me to buy. Then 5 weeks into the fabrication the building owner makes changes that affect me and drives the prices up and adds about 2 weeks to the job. When we got about a week before we were due to complete fabrication the owner starts shitting kittens because the cost is going up and the job is behind schedule. Then about 3 weeks before the building was due to be complete the GC’s calls and tells me he was fired.

That was 4 months ago. I was out at that building today to deliver the erection plans for the stairs that have been sitting on my yard for months to the new GC. The building owner really showed the world who was in control. And the old GC moved onto his next job, the retro on the building next door.

God I love this business!

The detailers lot is not an 'appy one.

We complain about you guys all the time "who is the moron who designed this connection so that you can't get the gun on half the bolts" etc.

I've seen what you guys go through---you can keep that job!

Detailing can be fun, but you need a team on it. Its not fun alone.

You never heard a detailer say...ha, I would love to hear the ironworkers when they try to make this connection:rolleyes:
