The Construction Thread

Good news for those who care about heavy infrastructure projects in the NY region...

I just got the magazine they send to people who have worked in the Jersey locals (where I spent most of 2006). It looks as if 6 Billion in funding has been secured to build the new Hudson River tunnel they've been talking about for 20 years. "Expected to create 50,000 jobs before completion in 2017".

Go Obama!

A little more research on that story might help you out. It's only a suggestion by the state of N.Y. to Obama. And they are hoping (at best) to get 1.5 billion.

Never pull information out a a union publication without checking, closely, first.

Aren't most tunnel liners going in as precast behind the TBM now?

NJ was supposed to put out bid doc's today for some of the prelim work. And solicit qualifications for the design and construction of the tunnel.......

I don't know if a Hudson Tunnel would be TBM. I can't remember if the Lincoln and Holland were bored or cut and cover. ANyway, you still have the approaches and everything.

The Holland Tunnel was a compressed air job. Dollars to dogshit you'll see a fancy euro TBM being used for the over 20,000 feet of tunnel required. The tunnel liner will be cast and cured off-site and then delivered JIT for installation. Sure there'll be lotsa work on the portals. I haven't checked to see if NJ put the approach stuff out to bid today like they were supposed to..
