The Construction Thread

I was in Vegas last week and noticed quite a bit of work (mostly all steel construction) happening downtown. There were cranes everywhere. One complex appeared to have 6 cranes. From the looks of things, there'll be plenty of work there for several more years.

Those are the jobs where the apprentice doesn't go out for coffee, he just makes the egg sandwhiches right on the iron. "Scrambled or fried?"

I actually prefer very hot strong sun and dry air to the 80% humidity we get here in the summer. So what if you have to wear long sleeves and sit on your bolt bags to avoid 2nd degree burns on your asscheeks?

How is your Spanish? I sure you would not be on the book very long.

"Oi! Mira! Watch the cabeza, you little fuckers!"

"Tell em to get the fuck out of there."

"I did already. They are pretending they don't speak ENglish"

"Ey, amigo! Muy peligroso! Flat like bug, squish, eh!?"

"Ah, fuck em"

"Union workers on MGM Mirage Inc.'s multibillion dollar CityCenter project struck late Monday after talks broke down between the Nevada Building and Construction Trades Council, casino giant MGM Mirage and project general contractor Perini Building Co. Construction workers have also walked off of the Cosmopolitan Resort project, another Perini run project.

The strike follows the deaths of six men on the CityCenter project, the latest death occurred Saturday when 39-year-old Dustin Tarter, a crane worker, was killed. Two workers have died on the Cosmopolitan project.

In a 11 a.m. news conference, Steve Ross with the Southern Nevada Building & Construction Trades Council said every property on the Las Vegas Strip has a safety issue.

"This is the sixth death since the start of the construction of the CityCenter project and this is unacceptable," said Ross.

He also said he had just been on the phone with Perini management and both sides would sit down and talk later in the afternoon to work out issues.

The council is throwing down the gauntlet. It has made suggestions to Perini Building Company and MGM-Mirage on ways to improve safety concerns at the job site.

They're demanding an immediate work site safety assessment, an on-site OSHA training course, both administered by the Center for Construction Research and Training, and full job site access to be granted to union officials and safety directors.

"Immediately is the time we're allowing Perini and MGM-Mirage to work with us in regards to these requests, meaning today," said Ross.

"We have the most dangerous work on the site -- no ifs, ands or buts. Something needs to be done," said an ironworker who didn't want his name given.

He will strike to save lives, "We're all behind this. Whatever has to be done to stop the men dying continuously. One man per month is what we have going right now. That's not okay."

"We want our men and women in this industry to go to work in the morning and go home at night," Ross said."

Sometimes an icepick to the forehead is the only way to get management's attention.

Right on, my Brothers.

Right on.

I was thinking today about why I love working in construction so much.

It all became clear: I can imagine shaving, putting on shiny shoes, making sure my suit and pants are pressed, and even my fingernails clean. All well and good.

But then I'm going to walk in there and some fucking moron is going to ask me "why are manhole covers round"??

Fuck that.

In my trade, the competent are separated from the incompetent in the first half hour. "Trip that column without taking out the power line".

The idea of having to go sit down with hat in hand answering asshole questions like why are manhole covers round fills me with horror.

It pisses me off when people attach drywall with nails. Someday, I'm gonna be the one who has to rip it off.

Just sayin'.

I work for a plumber/welder who does a lot of home reno. It's widely varied, which I like.

Oh cool. We have some some plumber and home contractor types in here. They are always going on about pipe fittings and pex and other weird shit that I don't understand.

What kind of welding does your outfit deal in?

Right on.

Not all manhole covers are round. :)

Someday, I'll tell you why the portholes on Norwegian ships are square.

So they can fit their square heads out.
