The Construction Thread

Nice to see some people working. There's a pile of jobs shut down here in Vegas. The cranes haven't moved for a long time.

I've never been in Vegas but from what I hear, it's all boom or bust there. NYC is a little more steady.

I was in Vegas staying near the convention center. Everyday the iron workers would have lunch at my small hotel. Those fuckers could pound the nooner beers!

I always look at those jobs and feel sorry for the developer. You do all the work and someone else comes along and makes the profit.

The engineer we use lives in Vegas. I should say lived in Vegas because he just got let go on Wednesday and is moving back here.

Things here are SLOW. Rebar is completely out of work and on the structural side we have dropped from 35% to 5% profit. It's going to be a long hard winter. But on the bright side we still have not let anyone go.

We have been effected by the stimulus money. Unfortunately it been selling pipe for road construction and that does not keep the shop guys working.

The latest issue of The Ironworker features a new gadget that seems pretty cool but on the other hand kind of useless. It's a virtual-reality welding trainer by Lincoln. You manipulate a stinger and wear a shield with a set of virtual-reality goggles in it.

I don't really get the point. It seems like you could just actually practice welding and the set-up would probably be much cheaper. On the other had, I guess this thing would work for practice at home in an apartment or something. I dunno.

Trade magazines usually have something strange in them. The "better mouse trap", in their opinion. Usually they aren't but some are an improvement.

Our last "better mouse trap" turned into a $80k piece of junk. It is usually down and a lot more money spent on continual repairs.

When the ASME allows it for qualifying welders, I'll be impressed.
