The Construction Thread

Having borne witness to several of our schools being gutted and renovated, my hats are off to them that are out there in the heat, and humidity, getting stuff done.

The big tube crossing the composition from left to right is bringing up muck from underground, dug up under the river by the TBM. Which is cool. [/via too many disco channel construction shows]

Taking work away from the muckers?

What the hell is this industry coming to?

I was tossed a set of plans for a GSA-IRS building and told to do a take off for a bid. It's a small job so they figured it was a good way to start learning that side of the business. The prints are well done and thank god the engineer/architect did not put out a speck book! The problem is that these morons are calling out material that is not made standard. These prints actuality call for a L 6 x 4 x 9/16 @ 9'-2" and for 2~ 14"sq base plates 1 1/16" thick. WTF?? And that is just a start.

In another section I was looking at a lintel over the main entrance. The prints told me to go to S3.2/15 for a cutout of the section. When I went to that sheet it showed the door and a note saying "Lintel", no size, no elevation just lintel.

And it is not just this job. It seems like more and more the contract drawings are getting shoddier all the time. I think it is the new young engineers and architects. The drawings I get from the older guys are top notch and have all the info you need, but the newer guys just seem to put out the minimum to get payed and then get pissed when you ask for more info. Has anyone else noticed this?

That does not give me a warn fuzzy feeling! I expect a certain level of mistakes (we all make them), and key stroke errors happen, but to just pull shit out of thin air without taking the time to open a book to check and see if what you want is even made is just laziness.

Seriously though have you noticed a difference between older and younger engineers/architects? I can open a set of prints and tell almost instantly is the person is old or new school.

You will find that you'd best know how to build anything you're bidding on.....don't take the plans as gospel......

Oh I can be flexible. But these kids go off the deep end when you point out the cost of machining what the want as apposed to going up to say 1 1/4" plate and shortening the column to make up the difference. The older guys say "shit my bad go up to the next best size and let me know so I can put it in the records".

BULLSHIT! It's more like a mad science that is best left to people with years of experience.

But even as a simple detailerIi would have to deal with the lack of detail in the contract drawings.

Definitely the guy with the experience should have the final say......

But someone has to make it all work....i see guys spending weeks checking dimensions, etc before sending it off to be fabbed.

I have not fucking idea. I think they just threw that in there to make it look impressive.
